Men's Basketball Knocks Off Michigan Tech, 74-62

The Warriors outscored the Huskies 22-6 in the game's final 8:42.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (11-10, 7-6) trailed GLIAC-leading Michigan Tech (15-6, 10-3) by four (56-52) with 8:42 to play on Thursday night.  From there until the final buzzer sounded, the Warriors outscored the Huskies 22-6 for the 74-62 victory, their third straight at home against MTU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The only tie of the first half came at 2-2 before Wayne State used a 13-5 run to go up by eight, 15-7.  The Warriors then took their biggest lead of the first 20 minutes at 10, 19-9, just over six minutes into the contest.

In that 13-5 spurt, Rob Lee, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) scored seven points, Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) added four and Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle [Macomb CC]) chipped in two.  Following a layup by Michigan Tech's Marcus Tomashek, Carlos Paull III (Southfield, Mich. / Cornerstone Lincoln-King [Missouri State - West Plains]) and Lee, Jr. stretched the margin to double digits with back-to-back two-pointers.

Over the course of the next 10-plus minutes, the visitors outscored their hosts by nine, 19-10, to claw back within one at 29-28.  Then, WSU's Paull III cashed a triple and so did Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher), which extended the good guys' advantage out to seven, 35-28, with under two minutes until the intermission.

However, Tomashek splashed back-to-back three-pointers and the margin was slimmed to one again (35-34) heading into the locker rooms.

Second Half
Following Lee, Jr. making one of two at the free throw line 28 seconds in, Tomashek's onslaught continued with a trey and jumper to give Michigan Tech its first lead of the night, 39-36.

The Huskies' largest advantage of the contest at eight would come just under four minutes later at the 14:53 mark, 46-38.  So from the 1:26 mark of the first half until that juncture, MTU had racked up 18 points to WSU's three.  Michigan Tech went on to lead by eight once more at 51-43.

Then came eight straight points for Wayne State, seven by Adley and another by Paul III.  With the score deadlocked for a second instance at 51-51, Tomashek wasn't done.  The long-range assassin drilled his sixth and final three of the night and his squad was back ahead by that many, 54-51.

Williams, Jr. cut the deficit to a pair thanks to a free throw and Tomashek responded with a two-pointer with 8:42 to go before the game was flipped on its head.

In that final eight minutes and 42 seconds (22-6 WSU run), Tomashek was held scoreless. He went 0-of-3 from the field (all three-pointers) and 0-of-2 at the charity stripe with two fouls and a turnover.

On the other side, five Warriors had a hand in those 22 points, Jordan Briggs (Muskegon, Mich.) with six, Harris with five, Adley with five, Williams, Jr. with four, and Lee, Jr. with two.  In that span, WSU combined to shoot 6-of-10 from the field and 9-of-13 at the free throw line.
