Softball Readies For Middle Four Games Of Spring Break Trip

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad has compiled a 3-1 mark in its first four games in Florida to improve to 6-7 overall.  The Warriors will continue their trip with two games each on Tuesday and Wednesday.

WSU will battle Glenville State at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by a 5:15 p.m. contest vs. Indiana (Pa.) [Tuesday game times were pushed back an hour].  The Wednesday games feature Winona State at 9 a.m. and Shepherd at 11:15 a.m.   All four games will be played at the Legends Way complex in Clermont, Fla.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Despite playing all four games without senior designated player Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central), who was injured in the top of the first in game one on Saturday, Wayne State went 3-1 over the weekend.  Josephson is batting a team-best .577 (15-for-26) with three doubles and a .656 on-base percentage.  Freshman pitcher/first baseman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) was selected GLIAC Player of the Week earlier today after hitting .500 (7-for-14) over the weekend with eight RBI.

Freshman third baseman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) is hitting .439 (18-for-41) with three home runs and 15 RBI, along with a .780 slugging percentage.  Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) has a 2.85 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 34.1 innings with two complete games.  Head coach Nicole Tines is in her fourth season leading the Warriors.

LEADING THE PIONEERS
Glenville State is 7-6 prior to games on Monday (3/10) vs. Lake Erie and Indianapolis.  Makenna Negley is batting a team-best .425 (17-for-40) with 12 RBI.  Delaney Warnick has belted five home runs and leads the squad with 17 RBI.  Emma McLean has a team-high seven stolen bases.  Meghan Stump (3-0, 0.58 ERA, 13 SO, 24 IP) and Kylie Burdick (1-4, 3.23 ERA, 29 SO, 39 IP) have seen a majority of the time in the circle for GSC.  Head coach Sara Scoone is in her fifth season leading the Pioneers.

LEADING THE CRIMSON HAWKS
IUP will take a 6-2 record into Tuesday's game vs. Ohio Dominican (prior to the contest against WSU).  Tess Smiley leads the Crimson Hawks with a .412 batting average (7-for-12), while Madison Pikula and Paige Truax have each driven in five.  Seventh-year head coach Shawna Bellaud as used both Kendall Young (4-0, 0.81 ERA, 11 SO, 26 IP) and Olivia Hillegas (2-2, 3.00 ERA, 16 SO, 25.2 IP) almost exclusively in the circle.

LEADING THE WINONA STATE WARRIORS
The "other" WSU Warriors (Winona State) have a 17-4 record prior to games on Tuesday against Ohio Dominican and Saint Martin's.  Indigo Fish is hitting .443 (27-for-61) with 12 RBI, while Braelee Jodarski has clobbered eight home runs and leads WSU with 26 RBI and an .841 slugging percentage.  Sam Keller is batting .438 (28-for-64) with 14 RBI and 13 extra-base hits.  Izzy Howe (9-1, 1.46 ERA, 80 SO, 72 IP) and Jayda Berg (7-3, 2.72 ERA, 25 SO, 61.2 IP) have pitched all but four innings this spring for 25th-year head coach Greg Jones.

LEADING THE RAMS
Shepherd entered its spring break trip with a 1-1 record after a home split with Slippery Rock in February.  The Rams are playing two G-MAC teams on Monday (Ohio Dominican and Findlay), Glenville State and Indianapolis on Tuesday, followed by a Wednesday morning tilt with Southwest Minnesota State before the game against Wayne State.  SU is led by eighth-year head coach Marissa Leslie.  Both Brenna Collis and Lexi Clatterbuck went 3-for-6 vs. Slippery Rock.  Madelayne Ruffner earned the victory with a complete game performance allowing just an unearned run on three hits with 10 strikeouts and zero walks.

UP NEXT
After an off day on Thursday (3/13), Wayne State will play twice each on Friday and Saturday to complete its spring break trip.
