ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The No. 14-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (8-4) fell in its final match over spring break as the Warriors were downed 4-0 by No. 2-ranked Flagler College (6-1) on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and
George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) captured the lone victory in doubles competition for WSU. The pairing defeated Makary Adamek and Filip Kana 6-2 while leading the whole way.
Iliam Borlee and Simon Malis prevailed over the Green and Gold duo of
Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) and
Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) 6-0 while competing in the No. 2 position.
In the No. 3 doubles spot,
Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and
Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) were bested 7-6 (7-3) by Baptiste Mercier and Aly El Rafie.
SINGLES
Day competed against Malis in the No. 2 singles position, falling 6-2, 6-1 to the Flagler student-athlete.
After falling in the first set 6-1, Wasner jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the second, but was thwarted 6-3 by Borlee.
Klaus started the first set against Kana well, claiming the first three games before the Saint rallied to win six of the next seven. The Warrior sputtered in the second set, being defeated 6-1.
Drenth, Hill, and Knowles did not finish their singles matches.

The Wayne State men's tennis squad will return home on Thursday, March 20 as the Warriors will host Tiffin University at 1:00 PM in the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.
