Softball Splits Pair Of One-Run Decisions In Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (7-8 overall) split a pair of one-run contests on Tuesday.  The Warriors were edged 3-2 by Glenville State College (10-7 overall) in the opener, before rallying from a 5-1 deficit for a 6-5 triumph in eight innings over Indiana (Pa.), who falls to 7-3 overall.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU grabbed an early 1-0 lead just six pitches into the game as sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) belted a 3-2 offering over the left centerfield fence.

The host Pioneers scored twice in the bottom of the first on three walks, and a two-run single by Makenna Negley.

Neither team had more than one base runner in a frame through the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth, junior Danielle Fick (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central [Notre Dame College]) advanced all the way to third as her drive to right field was misplayed thanks to the sun and wind.  With two outs, Forman drilled a triple to right field plating Fick with the tying run.

Glenville State countered in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt, another single and a walk to load the bases.  Negley hit a 1-0 pitch that fell just inside the left field foul line scoring Zailees Seda with the final run of the game.

WSU senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) led off the seventh with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview).  However, the next two Warriors were retired leaving Ruczynski in scoring position.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) was making her first start since April 12, 2023, and allowed three earned runs on four hits and five walks in five innings of work with three strikeouts.  Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College] retired all three batters she faced in the bottom of the sixth.

AndiJo Howard (3-1) went the distance for Glenville State.  She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts to one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Logan Forman had two hits and both RBI, while scoring one run.

LEADING THE PIONEERS
Seda scored twice, while Negley had two hits and all three RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State played long ball for the 15th time in 15 games in the bottom of the first as freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) smacked a 1-1 offering over the right field fence.

The game remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth when the Crimson Hawks scored five times on four hits (three went for extra bases) and a WSU miscue resulting in a pair of unearned runs.

The Warriors cut their deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  After the first two batters were retired, Forman worked a walk and went to second on a single by Williams.  Freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) worked a walk to load the bases.  Classmate Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) laced a two-run double down the left field line to make it 5-3.

Wayne State got the leadoff runner on in the sixth as senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) singled, but a ground ball double play ended that threat.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich. [Central Michigan]) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a one-out walk to Williams.  A ground out moved both runners into scoring position.  Down to its final strike, Koopman delivered a two-run single just over the shortstop's glove to knot the score at 5-5.

After IUP was unable to score in the top of the eighth using the international tie-breaker rule, Ruczynski was able to get the bunt down moving O'Donnell to third base with one out.  Fick wasted no time in drilling the first pitch over the right fielder's head for a walk-off single.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings with three strikeouts to one walk.  Fisher (3-5) earned the win by blanking the Crimson Hawks on two walks in three innings as she retired nine of the 11 batters she faced, including three on strikes.

Olivia Hillegas (2-3) suffered the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 7.1 innings.  She struck out one and walked four.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Elly Koopman went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Morgan Williams reached base four times on two hits and two walks and scored three runs.

LEADING THE CRIMSON HAWKS
Jordan Sylvia had two hits, two RBI and a run scored to pace IUP.

WSU Notes:  Four of the last five games have been decided by a run, and six of the last seven by two runs or less.
