Softball Goes 1-1 On Day Four Of Spring Break Trip

WSU defeats Winona State, but falls to Shepherd.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (8-9 overall) played twice more on Wednesday at the NTC Spring Games.  In a battle of the WSU Warriors (Wayne State [MI] and Winona State [MN]), the Michiganders prevailed 3-0 as junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) tossed her first career shutout.  In the nightcap, Shepherd (4-4 overall) outscored WSU 7-4.

GAME ONE RECAP
Wayne State took advantage of some wildness by Winona State (18-6 overall) both in the circle and on defense in the top of the first.  With one-out, freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) drew a six-pitch walk.  Classmate Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) roped a single into centerfield.  Freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) worked a six-pitch walk to load the bases.  After a strikeout, senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) hustled down the line on a chopper to short resulting in a wild throw to first allowing two runs to score.

Despite allowing Winona State's leadoff batter to reach in each of the first three innings, Batton retired the next three hitters in order each frame.  In the bottom of the fifth, Winona State had a leadoff single but Batton got a lineout and a strikeout before an infield single.  The Detroit ballclub was able to escape unharmed with an inning ending flyout to center.

Wayne State extended its margin to 3-0 in the top of the sixth as freshman Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) blasted a one-out solo home run to left.

Winona State was able to get two runners aboard in the sixth with two outs on a single and a Wayne State miscue, but a pop out ended that threat.

In the bottom of the seventh, Tiegan Mancuso had a one-out single and moved to second on a single by Sam Keller.  After an infield single by Kiley Slaats loaded the bases, Batton was able to end the game unscathed with a fly out and a pop out.

IN THE CIRCLE
Batton (1-2) notched her first win since garnering the victory in a 7-6 triumph at Northwood on April 20, 2023.  It was her first win as a starter since defeating Alliance on March 16, 2023.  In today's contest, Batton scattered eight singles and allowed just one walk (leading off the bottom of the first), while striking out four.

Izzy Howe (10-2) allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts and three walks.

LEADING WAYNE STATE
Three different Wayne State batters had hits, while Morgan Williams reached twice via a walk and scored once.

LEADING WINONA STATE
Sam Keller reached base three times via two singles and a walk, while Indigo Fish and Tiegan Mancuso each had two singles apiece.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second has Near had a leadoff triple to right center and scored on a two-out single down the left field line by sophomore Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

The Rams responded with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third on a single, a hit by pitch, and a two-out, two-run error on a dropped fly ball.

Shepherd added five runs in the top of the fifth on five hits, including a two-run triple, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly.

Wayne State kept battling scoring once in the bottom of the fifth and twice in the seventh.  In the fifth, Molly Hool had a sun-aided double down the left field line and twin sister Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) followed with a single.  With two outs, DeWitt had an RBI single up the middle to extend her hitting streak to eight games.

In the seventh, Williams worked a leadoff walk, but after back-to-back fielder's choices, Koopman plated DeWitt with an RBI double.  Near followed with an RBI single through the left side before the final out.

IN THE CIRCLE
