Women's Tennis Falls 6-1 at Nova Southeastern in Final Spring Break Contest

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (2-3) was bested 6-1 by No. 15-ranked Nova Southeastern University (11-0) Tuesday afternoon.  The loss concludes the team's spring break trip.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
In the No. 1 doubles position, Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) fell 6-1 to Ita Habekovic and Kristyna Hranacova.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) earned the only win for Wayne State in doubles as they topped Sofia Shing and Isabella Ciancaglini 6-3.

Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia / Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) and Dessyre Obedencio (Warren, Mich. / Cousino), while competing in the No. 3 spot, were defeated 6-0 by Julia Moraes and Noemie Dadoun.

SINGLES
In the No. 5 singles position, Uzcategui was the sole WSU student-athlete to claim victory, as the redshirt junior prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) over Dadoun.  

Ruyssen and Afarat both fell in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots respectively, as the graduate student was downed 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-6) by Hranacova while the junior was defeated by Habekovic 6-3, 6-4.

Ciancaglini toppled Beaulieu 6-4. 6-2 in the No. 4 singles position, while Obedencio lost to Moraes 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles spot.

Gorgidze was matched with Shing in the No. 3 slot, but was forced to retire early.

UP NEXT
The Wayne State women's tennis team will next compete on Saturday, March 15, as the Warriors welcome Saginaw Valley State University to the WSU Tennis Courts.  The first match is set to begin at 2:00 PM.
