DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad (3-3) topped Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) rival Saginaw Valley State University (1-8) 6-1 in the team's first match in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold got on the board first, securing the point in doubles after winning 2-of-3 matches.
In the No. 1 doubles position,
Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and
Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia / Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) triumphed over the Cardinal pairing of Adriana Barrio and Amelia Dickson 6-3.
Competing in the No. 3 slot,
Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) and
Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) prevailed 7-5 over Anastasia Diamatopoulos and Nicoletta Diamantopoulos.
Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and
Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) fell 6-3 to Lydia Liong and Elizabeth Stuart while battling in the No. 3 spot.
SINGLES
Ruyssen and Gorgidze brought their success from doubles competition into singles, as Ruyssen downed Barrio 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the No. 1 singles slot, while Gorgidze toppled Dickson 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 position.
In No. 2 singles, Arafat defeated Liong in a convincing manner, as the Warrior prevailed 6-1, 6-1.
Beaulieu and Uzcategui collected wins in singles as well, with Beaulieu triumphing 6-4, 6-2 over Stuart, while Uzcateguie claimed a 6-0, 6-3 victory over A. Diamantopoulos.
Weekes, while competing in the No. 4 singles position, fell 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 2-6 to N. Diamantopoulos.

The Wayne State women's tennis team will return on Sunday, March 23, as the squad will play host Division I opponent Oakland University.
