Baseball Suffers 6-1 Defeat at Hands of No. 18 Minnesota State

Neither team scored until the fifth inning.

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (6-9 overall) was defeated by 18th-ranked Minnesota State (12-1 overall) for the second time in as many days on Wednesday, this time by a count of 6-1.  Next up for the Warriors, they'll be off on Thursday before facing Minnesota Duluth (7-3 overall) in a Friday doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the fifth inning when Minnesota State put up a two spot in that frame as well as the home half of the sixth.

Trailing 4-0 in the seventh, Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. [Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC]) put Wayne State on the board with an RBI groundout to the shortstop that brought in Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central [Oakland]) from third base.

That'd be the Warriors' only scoring as the Mavericks tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.

Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) went 3-for-4 at the dish, already his seventh multi-hit outing of the season and fifth in the last six contests.  In that six-game stretch, Hitzelberger is hitting .609 (14-for-23) with just one strikeout.

Gavin Nash (Howell, Mich. / Hartland) got the start and fell to 1-2, but pitched well in his six innings of work.  Nash gave up four runs, only two earned, on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts.  In relief, Carson Tehan (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich S.S.) tossed a scoreless seventh before Ethan Getting (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Northern [Purdue Northwest]) threw the eighth.
