Softball Defeats Slippery Rock After Falling To Hillsdale

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball (9-10 overall) team went 1-1 on Friday, its next to last day in Florida.  The Warriors were blanked 6-0 by Hillsdale College (12-8 overall) in the opener, before rallying from a 1-0 deficit just seven pitches into the game to defeat Slippery Rock (4-12 overall) 5-1 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Chargers scored once in the bottom of the first on a walk, a stolen base and a two-out single by Emma Vis.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when a one-out double by Katie Matzat preceded a bunt single by Emma Sather.  After Sather stole second, both runners scored on a two-run single up the middle by Sydney Davis to make it 3-0.  HC added an unearned run when a fly ball was dropped with two outs.

Hillsdale scored two insurance runs in the fifth on a single, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a two-run, two-out single by Davis.

Wayne State had just three runners reach second base and no one was able to advance to third base.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed four runs (three earned) in four innings on seven hits.  She struck out two and walked four and had her record fall to 1-3.  Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts in two innings.

Joni Russell (5-1) blanked WSU on three hits with 13 strikeouts to two walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) was the lone Wayne State batter to reach base twice - via a single and a walk.

LEADING THE CHARGERS
Sydney Davis had two hits, four RBI and a run scored, while Emma Sather scored twice.  Hannah Hoverman went 1-for-2 with two walks.

GAME TWO RECAP
Alexsa Hurd hit a 2-2 offering over the center field fence in the top of the first giving Slippery Rock an early 1-0 lead.

The score stayed 1-0 as WSU only had one base runner in the first three innings.  In the bottom of the fourth, Forman had a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Morgan Williams (Midland,Mich.).  Classmate Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) laced a full count pitch into left center to knot the game at 1-1.  Freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) had a double down the left field line to move DeWitt to third.  Rookie Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) delivered a two-run single on a 2-1 offering into left center field to snap the 1-1 deadlock.  After a strikeout, an unearned run scored on a throwing error by the Rock.

The game's final run came in the bottom of the sixth as DeWitt had a leadoff double, moved to third on a fielding error and scored when the Slippery Rock catcher was unable to fake a throw to second during a stolen base and bounced the ball back to the pitcher's circle.

IN THE CIRCLE
Koopman (3-0) held the Rock to one earned run on five hits in seven innings with four strikeouts to three walks.

Hurd (3-3) went the distance for SRU surrendering five runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings.  She struck out 10 and did not walk a batter.
