Softball Splits on Final Day In Florida To Finish Trip At 7-5

Long notches first shutout of the season.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (10-11 overall) concluded its spring break trip with a winning record after defeating Saint Michael's (2-1 overall) 9-0 in six innings, and falling 12-0 to Emporia State (20-9 overall) in five innings.  The Warriors went 7-5 during the NTC Spring Games.

GAME ONE RECAP
After being stymied by Purple Knight starting pitcher CJ Davidson through the first three innings (she retired the first 10 WSU batters), Wayne State scored five runs in the top of the fourth and added four more in the top of the sixth to complete the mercy-rule game.

Freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) fouled off two 2-2 pitches, and then singled up the middle on a 3-2 offering to snap Davidson's streak.  Classmate Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) singled down the right field line and freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) walked on four pitches to load the bases.  Rookie Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) delivered a two-run single down the left field line to break the scoreless deadlock.  It would be Near's third game-winning RBI in Florida (Lake Erie and Slippery Rock).  Following a fielder's choice, junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) hit a blooper that the second baseman's diving attempt was unsuccessful to make it 3-0.  Pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) reached on a throwing error to re-load the bases.  Senior Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich. [Central Michigan]) singled off the third baseman producing the fifth run of the frame.

After allowing a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth, Long struck out the next six Saint Michael's batters in order.

In the top of the sixth after the first two Warriors were retired, Long reached on a fielding error, moved to second on a single by Martinez and scored when sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Mich.) ripped a double down the third base line.  Williams' infield single up the first base line plated another run to make it 7-0.  DeWitt and Koopman each had RBI singles to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (3-1) blanked the Purple Knights on five hits in six innings.  She struck out 10 and did not issue a walk in recording her second collegiate shutout (first was a 2-0 win over Quincy on March 12, 2024).

CJ Davidson started for Saint Michael's and allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits in 3.2 innings.  She struck out two and walked on.  Maddy Eaton hurled the final 2.1 innings surrendering four unearned runs on six hits.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Four different WSU batters (Morgan Williams, Katelyn DeWitt, Elly Koopman and Madison Martinez) had two hits each in the contest with Williams scoring twice and Hunter Near driving in two.

LEADING THE PURPLE KNIGHTS
Jenna Devens went 3-for-3 with a double, while Brooke Edgerly went 2-for-3.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Hornets tallied three runs in the top of the first and never looked back.  Emporia State had two singles, a double and a Warrior error to score the first three runs of the game.

ESU added to its lead with six unearned runs (seven total) in the third on a home run by Brooke Flewelling, triples by Sydney Wagner and Juliana De Luna, a double by Mallory Moore, along with a pair of singles.  The frame began with a WSU miscue.

The Hornets completed the scoring with two runs in the top of the fifth.

Meanwhile, Wayne State was limited to one hit, a two-out single in the bottom of the first by DeWitt.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) started for the Warriors and allowed nine runs (three earned) in 2.2 innings on nine hits and one walk with one strikeout.  Classmate Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) allowed one run while recording four strikeouts in her 1.1 innings of work.  Freshman Montgomery Pepin (Gladstone, Mich.) notched the final three outs allowing two earned runs on three hits with a walk and one strikeout.

Gracie Rabe (7-6) retired 15 of the 16 WSU batters and allowed just one hit.  She did not record a strikeout or a walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Katelyn DeWitt was the lone WSU batter to reach base on a single.

LEADING THE HORNETS
Taryn Burkhardt went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while both Mallory Moore and Juliana De Lune each went 2-for-3, with two runs scored and two RBI.  Kinsey Perine went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
