Softball Splits High Scoring Doubleheader With Northwood

WSU wins game two 7-5, after falling 7-3 in the opener.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (11-12 overall) split its home opening day with visiting Northwood University (12-8 overall).  The Timberwolves rallied for a 7-3 triumph in game one, while the Warriors held on for 7-5 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU scored once in the second inning and added another in the fifth for a 2-0 lead, before NU responded with a seven-run sixth inning.  Wayne State scored once in the bottom of the sixth but that would not be enough.

Freshman shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) led off the bottom of the second with a double to left center as Northwood left fielder Sayler Cuthrell was unable to make a diving catch.  Near moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.), then scored when sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) ripped an RBI double that stayed just fair and just missed being a home run down the left field line due to the wind.

The Warriors extended their advantage to 2-0 in the fifth as freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) worked a two-out walk and scored when the left fielder for Northwood was unable to catch a fly ball in the wind.

Long was cruising through the first five innings in the circle notching 15 outs in 20 batters.

In the top of the sixth, the Timberwolves had four of their first five batters reach on three singles and a walk.  A dropped fly ball tied the game at 2-2.  A two-run pinch-hit single by NU's Delaney Belding snapped the 2-2 deadlock.  After an RBI double by Ashlyn Lundquist, Delanie Gale had a two-run single.

WSU's run in the bottom of the sixth came as junior outfielder Danielle Fick (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central [Notre Dame College] worked a one-out walk, then stole second.  She scored on sophomore Logan Forman's (Brantford, Ont.) two-out single down the third base line.

Wayne State extended its lead to 4-0 in the second as Fick had a leadoff double, and was sacrificed to third by freshman catcher Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview).  With one out, Forman had a sacrifice fly to plate Fick.

Northwood scored twice in the top of the third to cut its deficit in half on a solo home run by Ashley Ziel, along with a single, an error and another single.
