DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad (4-3) downed Division I opponent Oakland University (3-8) 5-2 on Sunday. The win pushes WSU's overall ledger to 4-3 and marks the team's final non-conference match of the campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold claimed the early lead, as the squad secured the point in doubles by winning 2-of-3 matches.
Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and
Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) prevailed over Tara Montreuil and Martyna Piechowicz 5-7 while competing in the No. 2 position.
In the No. 3 slot,
Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) and
Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) battled with Nisa Bulut and Best Lee. The Warrior pairing downed the duo from Oakland 6-2.
Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and
Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia / Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) were bested by Emilia Jarvinen and Edie Hammond 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles spot.
SINGLES
After falling in doubles competition, Ruyssen was able to right the ship, defeating Jarvinen 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles slot.
Arafat split her first two sets with Bulut 6-0, 4-6, forcing a tie-breaker set. The WSU student-athlete prevailed, winning the final set 6-3 and capturing the victory in the No. 2 position.
Weekes and
Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) both earned wins in the No. 4 and No. 6 slots respectively. The junior downed Hammond 6-4, 7-5, while the redshirt junior toppled Montreuil 6-2, 6-0.
Both Gorgidze and Beaulieu fell in singles, as Gorgidze was bested 5-7, 2-6 by Lee and Beaulieu fell 3-6, 6-3, 13-15 in three sets against Piechowicz.

The Wayne State women's tennis team will return to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on Friday, March 28, as the Green and Gold will host Davenport University.
