Softball Drops GLIAC Opener To Davenport

DU wins 2-0 and 5-2.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (11-14 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) began conference play with a pair of home setbacks to visiting Davenport University (11-11 overall, 2-0 GLIAC).  DU scored twice in the top of the seventh to claim game one 2-0, the won the nightcap 5-2.

GAME ONE RECAP
Warrior starter Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and Panther hurler Hailey Whisman (6-4) each put zeroes for the first six innings.

Davenport had four base runners through the first five innings on two singles, a hit by pitch and a fielding error.  A leadoff single in the sixth was followed by a ground out and a strikeout.  Alaina Schwanke hit a single but Wayne State left fielder Danielle Fick (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central [Notre Dame College]) threw a laser home to nail Brooke Bernt, who was trying to score from second.

In the top of the seventh, DU had a leadoff triple by Peyton Smith before Long struck out the next two batters on 17 pitches.  The Panthers then scored twice as the next three hitters had singles.

WSU had a runner at second with one out in both the first and second innings but were unable to get a key hit.  Back-to-back one-out singles in the fourth by freshmen Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) preceded two consecutive outs.

Despite a one-out double in the seventh by rookie Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.), she was stranded at second.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (3-3) allowed two earned runs on eight hits, while striking out nine.  She walked just one.

Whisman tossed a five-hit shutout.  She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hunter Near had two hits, including a double.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Brooke Bernt went 2-for-3.

GAME TWO RECAP
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the second on a one-out walk to sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.).  She moved to second on a ground out and scored on an RBI single by senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada).

Davenport responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third after the first two batters were retired.  Four straight singles gave the guests a 2-1 lead.

DU extended its lead in the fourth on an unearned run via a pair of Warrior miscues.

The Panthers scored once in the fifth to lead 4-2.  A two-out double by Ally Prasnjak plated Savanna Disbrow, who had singled.

Davenport had a leadoff single and a two-out RBI double by Disbrow in the seventh to score the game's final run.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) tossed a complete game allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits.  Batton (1-5) struck out two and did not issue a walk.

Hannah Tahaney (4-4) surrendered two earned runs on nine hits.  She struck out five and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) and Ruczynski each had two hits with Ruczynski driving in both runs.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Savanna Disbrow went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Madison Cole had two hits.

UP NEXT
Wayne State continues conference play on Sunday with a twinbill at Gary L Bryce Field against Ferris State.  First pitch of game one is slated for noon.
