Softball Splits Home Doubleheader Against Ferris State

FSU wins 9-1, before WSU prevails 5-4.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (12-15 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) split a home Sunday twinbill against Ferris State University (12-6 overall, 1-1 GLIAC).  FSU won the opener 9-1 scoring six times in the seventh, while the Warriors had a 5-0 lead after two innings in the nightcap and held on for a 5-4 triumph.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Bulldogs scored once in the top of the fourth to break a scoreless draw.  A leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt, preceded an RBI single by Maddie Gkekas.

Ferris State extended its advantage to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth.  The first two batters reached on a hit by pitch and a single, before a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners.  A sacrifice fly by Alexis Kozlowski made it 2-0, and Emma Gillard followed with an RBI double.

FSU sealed the road win with a six-run top of the seventh on six hits and a walk.

WSU scored once in the bottom of the seventh after the first two batters were retired.  Freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) singled up the middle and came around to score on a double to right center by classmate Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.).

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.)allowed eight earned runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings.  She struck out one and walked four.  Koopman recorded the final two outs allowing one run on two hits.

Catherine O'Donohue (4-0) limited Wayne State to just one hit through six innings and three total.  She struck out three and walked one, while allowing one run.

Sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) and Koopman had singles, while Near contributed an RBI double.

Ten different FSU batters had one hit apiece, with Kozlowski and Bailey McCalister each garnering two RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as leadoff batter Logan Forman laced an 0-1 offering over the center field fence for her team-leading fourth home run of the season.

The Warriors increased their margin with four runs in the bottom of the second.  Sophomore Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) drew a leadoff walk, and twin sister Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) followed with a single.  Forman ripped an RBI double down the left field line to make it 2-0.  Freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) had an RBI single through the right side with a second run scoring on an FSU fielding error for a 4-0 lead.  Freshman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) singled to put runners on the corners.  Koopman reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.  Near drove in WSU's fifth run with a fielder's choice.

The Bulldogs pulled within two at 5-3 in the top of the third on a walk, a single and a three-run home run to center field by Kozlowski.

WSU junior pitcher Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) retired 12 of the next 13 Ferris State batters, until a leadoff single in the top of the seventh.  After a lineout and a strikeout, Jadyn Joseph had an RBI triple to cut the WSU lead to one at 5-4.  An intentional walk and a five-pitch walk loaded the bases but Fisher was able to induce a ground ball to third off the bat of O'Donohue to end the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Fisher (5-6) allowed four earned runs on five hits in seven innings.  She struck out four and walked five.

Ella Covill-Marter (5-3) surrendered four earned runs on five hits in one-plus innings of work.  She walked two of the 10 batters she faced.  Cecelia Bell retired 12 of the final 13 batters she faced.  Bell allowed one earned run on three hits in five innings with one strikeout and one walk.

Forman had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI, while junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) also had two hits.

Joseph and Kozlowski each had two hits and a run scored, with Kozlowski driving in three and earning a pair of walks.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude its eight-game home stand on Wednesday with a GLIAC doubleheader vs. Saginaw Valley State.  First pitch of game one is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Gary L. Bryce Field.
