Softball Splits With GLIAC Pre-Season Favorite Saginaw Valley State

WSU won the nightcap 8-3 after falling in game one.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (13-16 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) split a home GLIAC doubleheader on Wednesday against pre-season favorite Saginaw Valley State University (16-8 overall, 3-1 GLIAC).  The visiting Cardinals won the opener 13-1 in five innings, with the Warriors claiming the nightcap 8-3.

GAME ONE RECAP
SVSU took advantage of wildness by WSU starter Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) in the top of the first as the first four batters reached on three walks and a hit by pitch to plate one run.  An RBI ground out made it 2-0.

Saginaw Valley extended its lead to 5-0 in the second inning on RBI doubles by Natalie Savage and Kate Pnacek, along with a run scoring on the back end of a caught stealing.

The Cardinals hit back-to-back home runs by Emma Helvie and Kenzie Bromley with one out in the third.

WSU's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) reached on a fielding error, moved to second on a passed ball and advance to third on an infield single by freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.).  Wayne State was able to pull off the first and third double steal with DeWitt scoring her team-leading 25th run.

SVSU tallied six runs in the top of the fifth on four hits, a walk, a hit by pitch and a Warrior miscue to finish the scoring at 13-1.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (3-5) allowed seven earned runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.  She walked three.  Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) retired five of the first six batters she faced before the fifth inning.  Batton recorded five strikeouts to one walk in 2.2 innings, while allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits.

Macy Irelan (8-3) allowed one unearned run on three hits in five innings with eight strikeouts to zero walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.), Koopman and junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) each had a single.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Aalana Kimble and Pnacek each had two hits with Kimble scoring twice and driving in two, while Pnacek scored three times and had three RBI.  Helvie had two RBI and scored twice.

GAME TWO RECAP
The start to the nightcap was eerily similar to game one as Saginaw Valley State grabbed a 2-0 lead just nine pitches into the contest on a single by Kimble and a two-run home run by Jenna Morse.

Bromley smacked her second home run of the day in the top of the second increasing the visitors advantage to 3-0.

WSU was able to even the score at 3-3 in the third thanks to three infield singles by senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada), sophomore Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and Forman.  An RBI ground out by freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) put Wayne State on the scoreboard.  DeWitt followed by lacing a 1-1 offering into right field for a two-run single.

The Warriors had their first seven batters in the fourth reach resulting in a five-run frame.  Maddie Hool reached on a throwing error which preceded three consecutive singles by senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.), Ruczynski and Molly Hool, with Molly's bloop single down the left field line snapping the 3-3 deadlock.  A bases loaded walk to Forman made it 5-3.  The Cardinals brought in Irelan, but Williams hit a laser down the right field line on a 2-2 pitch plating three runs.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) evened her record at 6-6 by blanking SVSU over the final five innings.  She retired 10 of the final 13 Cardinal hitters allowing two walks and one to reach on an error.  For the game, Fisher allowed three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts to four walks.

Kimble started for Saginaw Valley and surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and one walk in three-plus innings with six strikeouts.  Irelan allowed all three inherited runners to score.  She finished with four strikeouts in two scoreless innings.  Delaney Conley allowed two hits and zero runs in her one inning of work.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Molly Hool went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Forman, DeWitt and Ruczynski each had two hits.  Forman and Ruczynski each scored twice while DeWitt drove in a pair.  Williams went 1-for-4 but had four RBI.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Morse went 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBI and a run scored.
