Women's Tennis Prevails 7-0 over Panthers

DETROIT -- The No. 32-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (5-3 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) prevailed 7-0 over Davenport University (8-8 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) Friday afternoon.  The win improves WSU's ledger to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors swept all three matches, laying claim to the doubles point.

Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) competed against Sienna Opray and Skye Vandeleur in the No. 1 doubles position.  The Green and Gold duo prevailed 6-4 over the pairing from DU.

In the No. 2 slot was the pairing of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School).  The WSU student-athletes earned a 6-2 win over Amy Bloch and Lotte Federski.

Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) represented Wayne State in the No. 3 doubles spot, winning 6-2 over Erin Hack and Kumiko Yamaguchi.

SINGLES
Ruyssen, in the No. 1 singles spot, earned a hard-fought victory over Opray.  After winning in the first set 6-4, Ruyssen dropped the second 1-6 which forced a tie-breaker set.  In the final set, the battle-tested Ruyssen prevailed 7-5 to claim the match.

Arafat prevailed in come-from-behind fashion, falling in her first set 3-6, before triumphing in the next two 6-2, 7-5 over Bloch.

Gorgidze and Weekes, in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, both earned victories as well, with Gorgidze downing Vandeleur 6-3, 6-2, and Weekes topping Federski 6-1, 6-1.

WSU triumphed in the No. 5 and No. 6 slots as well, as Beaulieu won 6-4, 6-1 while competing with Hack.  Uzcategui took care of business in the No. 6 position, defeating Valentina Moreno 6-0, 6-0.

UP NEXT
The Wayne State women's tennis team will return to the court on Saturday, March 29, as the Warriors will host No. 28-ranked Grand Valley State University.  The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
