Softball To Host Saginaw Valley For Midweek Twinbill

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (12-15 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) will conclude its eight-game home stand this Wednesday (March 26th) with a conference twinbill vs. Saginaw Valley State University (15-7 overall, 2-0 GLIAC).  First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Gary L Bryce Field.

WSU went 1-3 in its GLIAC opening weekend falling twice to Davenport (2-0 and 5-2) before splitting on Sunday with Ferris State (1-9, 5-4).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
In terms of national rankings, freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) is 28th in sac bunts per game (0.26), a mark that leads the GLIAC.  Sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) is 41st in sacrifice flies (3).

Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) is tied for the GLIAC lead in games started (11), and leads the league in appearances in the circle (16).  Freshmen Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) is tied for the conference lead in runs scored (24), and currently leads the squad in hits (34), doubles (6), triples (3) and batting average (.400), while classmate Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) has a team-high 22 RBI.  Forman has blasted a team-best four home runs, while Williams has walked 13 times.

Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) leads the squad with five wins.  She has a 3.35 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 60.2 innings.  Long is 3-3 with a team-best 54 strikeouts in 67.2 innings.  Koopman is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in 18.2 innings.  Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) has thrown 32 innings after missing all of last season.

Nicole Tines is in her fourth season guiding the Warriors.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Saginaw Valley State is led offensively by Lillia Sherman, who is batting a team-best .368 (21-for-57) with six doubles.  Outfielder/pitcher Alana Kimble is hitting .329 (25-for-76) with three triples.  Mya Purdy has a team-high 16 RBI, while Olivia Elliott has smacked a team-best four round trippers.  Ella Reifschneider has a .407 on-base percentage thanks to 12 walks in 57 plate appearances.  Jenna Morse is 12-for-13 on stolen base attempts.

Macy Irelan has been SVSU's primary pitcher compiling a 6-3 record with nine complete games (in nine starts) and a 1.34 ERA.  She has struck out 97 in a team-best 62.2 innings.  Kimble (6-2, 1.95 ERA, 28 SO, 50.1 IP) and Delaney Conley (2-1, 3.57 ERA, 12 SO, 15.2 IP) are next in terms of innings pitched for third-year head coach Ryan Schalk.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will hit the road for its first away conference games of the season visiting Parkside on Saturday and Roosevelt on Sunday, weather permitting.  WSU's next home doubleheader in on Wednesday, April 2nd vs. Tiffin.
