Softball Wins Twice At Roosevelt

Warriors claim doubleheader with victories of 6-4 and 9-3.

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Wayne State University softball team (15-16 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) recorded a road sweep at Roosevelt University (9-17 overall, 3-5 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.  WSU won game one 6-4 scoring all six runs in the top of the fourth.  In the nightcap, the Warriors scored four in the top of the first and went on to defeat the Lakers 9-3.  It was Wayne State's first GLIAC road sweep since April 15, 2017, when WSU won twice at Lake Erie (3-0 and 4-2).

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU starting pitcher Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the first and left the bases loaded in the second before the Lakers were able to push across the first run of the game in the third.

A one-out single by Brynn Dvoracek preceded a sacrifice bunt by Rebecca Urbaniak.  A two-out single by Libby Kreykes plated Dvoracek with the game's first run.

The Warrior bats, after having 10 straight retired, came alive in the fourth.  Freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) was plunked on the 10th pitch of her at bat.  Classmate Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) then blasted a 2-1 offering over the center field fence to put Wayne State ahead 2-1.  Freshman Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) then laced the very next pitch over the left center field fence to make it 3-1, and prompting an RU pitching change.

Junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) greeted reliever Riley Czarnecki with a single up the middle.  Senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) ripped a double down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position.  Hool scored on a wild pitch with O'Donnell coming in to score on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt.

Senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) had an infield single after fouling off four consecutive pitches.  Senior Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich. [Central Michigan]) reached on a throwing error with Ruczynski scoring from second after her stolen base to make it 6-1.

Roosevelt scored three times in the bottom of the fifth on four hits, including a two-out, two-run triple by Bianca Gallegos, to cut its deficit to two at 6-4.

RU had a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh by Libby Kreykes, which was followed by a single to center but Ruczynski threw a strike to home plate with sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) applying the tag to end the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Batton (2-5) allowed four earned runs on eight hits in five innings.  She struck out six and walked three.  Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) notched her second save of the campaign by tossing two scoreless innings of relief allowing three hits with four strikeouts.

Kailey Hancock (3-5) started for RU and surrendered three earned runs on three hits in 3.1 innings.  Hancock struck out three and did not walk a batter.  Czarnecki pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with one strikeout to one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Logan Forman and Mady Ruczynski each had two hits, while four other WSU batters (Elly Koopman, Hunter Near, Maddie Hool and Jessie O'Donnell) had a hit and a run scored.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Bianca Gallegos went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Athena Pomele-Pen, Brynn Dvoracek and Libby Kreykes each had two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State notched four hits and a hit by pitch as five of the first seven batters of the game reached prompting a pitching change by Roosevelt.  Freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) had a one-out double and after DeWitt was hit by a pitch, Koopman delivered a two-run double to left center.  Near's RBI single plated Koopman for a 3-0 advantage.  After a lineout, Molly Hool's (Allen Park, Mich.) triple increased the WSU lead to 4-0.

The Lakers scored once in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by Pomele-Pen.  Three singles by Roosevelt in the bottom of the second plated its second run of the game to make it 4-2.

The Warriors extended their margin in the third as Near had a leadoff triple and scored on a one-out RBI single by Molly Hool making it 5-2.

Wayne State tallied two unearned runs in the sixth as Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) had a leadoff single and Williams reached on a one-out error.  With two outs, Koopman had another two-run double increasing the lead to 7-2.

RU had a one-out pinch-hit triple in the sixth by Angelina Diaz, who scored on a two-out RBI single by Ella Dvoracek.

WSU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as Molly Hool had a one-out single and Ruczynski reached on an error.  With two outs, Forman's two-run triple completed the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) tossed the complete-game victory to improve to 7-6.  She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits, but struck out seven to just one walk.

Catie Luzzi (1-6) started for Roosevelt and surrendered four earned runs on four hits while recording two outs.  Czarnecki hurled 4.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits.  She struck out two and walked one.  Hancock pitched the final two innings and allowed three runs (zero earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.

Elly Koopman, Hunter Near and Molly Hool each had three hits with Koopman driving in four.

Ella Dvoracek went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Athena Pomele-Pen had two hits and an RBI.

Wayne State will conclude its weekend road trip with a twinbill on Saturday at Parkside.  First pitch of game one is slated for noon Central time.
