Men's Tennis Triumphs 5-1 Over Gyrenes

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (7-1) defeated Ave Maria University (2-3) 5-1.  The match was the first of five that WSU will play on its Spring Break trip.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
Due to weather conditions, the squads did not compete in doubles.

SINGLES
Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) both earned wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions respectively.  The senior captured a lead early in the first set against AJ Duggan, winning 6-1, before falling in the second 6-3.  Drenth won his tie-breaker set 9-7 to win his match.  Day faced Pedro Garcia, prevailing 6-2, 6-1.

Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) competed for the Green and Gold in the No. 3 slot, defeating Andreu Solvia 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

In the No. 4 spot, Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) battled with Juan Ignacio Garcia.  Garcia claimed the first set 6-1, but the Warrior roared back in the second to win 7-6 (7-5).  Klaus was bested in the tie-breaker set 10-8.

Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) each claimed victory in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.  Hill defeated Joao Almeida 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, while Knowles prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 over Nolan Smith.

UP NEXT
The Wayne State men's tennis team will play its second Spring Break contest on Thursday, March 6.  The Warriors will face Barry University, with the first match set to begin at 2:00 PM.
