No. 2 Lakers Stop Women's Basketball in GLIAC Semifinals; Warriors Await Selection Sunday

GVSU stole the game's momentum with 23 points to WSU's seven in the second quarter.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The fourth-seeded Wayne State University women's basketball team (19-11 overall) fell to second-ranked and top-seeded Grand Valley State (31-2 overall) on Saturday afternoon in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals.  The Warriors were defeated by a score of 78-54 and now await their fate in Sunday night's NCAA Selection Show, which begins at 10:30 p.m.

FIRST QUARTER
Wayne State couldn't have asked for a better start scoring the game's first seven points, all of which belonged to Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center).  Tripp hit a pair of layups before cashing a three-pointer from straight on.

Grand Valley State countered with a 6-0 run of its own and cut the margin to one at 7-6.  The Warriors took it in stride though notching the ensuing six points, including four by Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and two more from Tripp, to lead by seven again (13-6).

With 3:36 to play from that point until the final first-half buzzer, the Lakers outscored their opponent 9-2 to even the game up at 15-15 through 10 minutes of play.

SECOND QUARTER
Grand Valley State outscored Wayne State 23-7 in the second quarter while shooting 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from the field to the Warriors' 3-of-10 (30 percent).  Four of those seven Laker makes came from behind the arc as the home team's advantage was as large as 18 (38-20) before the halftime score of 38-22.

WSU turned the ball over 17 times in the first 20 minutes leading to 14 GVSU points.  Grand Valley State gave the ball away just five times resulting in two Wayne State points.

THIRD QUARTER
Thompson scored the third period's first bucket with a driving layup 17 seconds in, but Grand Valley State proceeded to score 12 of the next 14 points.  That outburst stretched the home team's lead to 24, 50-26 at the 5:35 juncture.

Thompson then reached double-figure points (10) with a hook shot and Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) broke into the scoring column thanks to a triple from the right wing.  At that point, the margin had slimmed to 19, 50-31.

The scoring was much more balanced the rest of the quarter, 9-5 in favor of the hosts.  GVSU's advantage was 23 (59-36) through 30 minutes of action.
