Women's Tennis Thwarted 6-0 at Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (2-2) fell 6-0 at No. 3-ranked Barry University (10-1) on Sunday.  The loss moves WSU to 2-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia / Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) started the match off well, triumphing 6-4 over Alina Michalitsch and Ailen Crespo in the No. 1 doubles spot.

The Warriors were unable to earn the doubles point however, as the other two Green and Gold pairings were both defeated.

In the No. 2 position, Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) were downed by Viktoriia Dema and Margaryta Malakhova 6-4.

The duo of Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) and Dessyre Obedencio (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) were topped by Dinara Alloiarova and Maria Tatarnikova 6-3 while competing in the No. 3 slot.

SINGLES
The Buccaneers swept Wayne State in singles competition.

Ruyssen, in the No. 1 singles position, was matched with Dema.  The BU student-athlete claimed the 6-3, 6-0 victory over the Warrior.

Despite winning the first set 6-4, Arafat dropped the ensuing two to Michalitsch 2-6, 5-10, falling in the No. 2 spot.

Gorgidze faced Alloiarova in the No. 3 slot, but the two were unable to complete their match.

Angela Leweurs topped Beaulieu 6-4, 6-4 as the two student-athletes battles in the No. 4 position.

In the No. 5 and No. 6 slots were Uzcategui and Obedencio.  Uzcategui fell 6-1, 6-2 to Crespo, while Obedencio was defeated by Tatarnikova by a score of 6-1, 6-0.

UP NEXT
The Wayne State women's tennis team will return on Tuesday, March 11, as the Green and Gold are set to face Nova Southeastern University, with the first match scheduled for 2:00 PM at the NSU Tennis Complex at Rolling Hills.
