Men's Tennis Defeats Roosevelt 7-0 On the Road

CHICAGO -- The No. 19-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (13-5 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) claimed a 7-0 victory at Roosevelt University (8-13 overall, 0-6 GLIAC) on Friday.  The match served as the first meeting between the squads.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
In the inaugural meeting between the Lakers and the Warriors, WSU struck first as it secured the point in doubles by prevailing in all three positions.

In the No. 1 spot was the pairing of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School).  Drenth and Wasner topped Victor Dorojan and DeMille Scarabello 6-2.

George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) battled with Enzo Soares and Justus Peters in the No. 2 slot, as the WSU student-athletes triumphed 7-6 (7-2).

In the No. 3 doubles position, Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) and Max Faniel (Theux, Belgium / Collège Saint-François-Xavier S.S.) downed Jose Pablo Mozas Pavon and Lakshay Vivek 6-4.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold continued its barrage in singles play, claiming all six matches.

Drenth captured a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dorojan as the two battled in the No. 1 singles position.

Day, while competing in the No. 2 position, was tied with Vivek at one set apiece.  After losing in the first game, and going down 1-0, the WSU student-athlete rallied back to top his opponent 6-2 in the tie-breaker set.

Wasner and Klaus each earned victories as well, with the freshman posting a 6-0, 6-1 win over Scarabello, while the graduate student downed Peters 6-1, 6-0.

Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) saw action in the No. 5 singles spot, earning a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3) come-from-behind win against Juan Pablo Espinosa.

In the No. 6 position, Max Faniel nabbed his first collegiate victory in singles competition, downing David Hofman 6-2, 6-0.

FROM HEAD COACH BRYAN MORROW
"Got a nice win over Roosevelt.  We mixed up our doubles squads, tried some different things, and looked pretty good.  Tom (Wasner) played a very clean match in the No. 3 singles slot, was very focused, and played exactly how we wanted him to.  George (Day) battled into the third set and found a way in the third to win.  Cedric played a very solid match, while Ben (Hill) had a nice comeback and found a way to get it done.  Max (Faniel) picked up his first win at Wayne State and I am very proud of the way that he played today.  He was a little nervy at first but ultimately got it done.  Overall, I am very proud of the boys and look forward to our match tomorrow."
