Men's Tennis Falls 4-3 in Heartbreaker at Purdue Northwest

GRIFFITH, Ind. -- The No. 19-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (13-6 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) was bested 4-3 by No. 29-ranked Purdue University Northwest (16-7 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) handled business in the No. 1 doubles position, defeating Alex Miguel van Lumich Lozano and Samuel Dickson 7-6 (7-2).

Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) and Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) competed in the No. 2 doubles spot, where the pair fell 6-1 to Francisco Lanusse and Joao Martins.

In the No. 3 slot, George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) were defeated by the PNW duo of Daniel Sroka and Daniel Chicano Melero 7-5.

SINGLES
Drenth, in the No. 1 singles position, downed Lozano 6-4, 6-2, to tie the match at one point apiece.  Along with aiding the squad, Drenth is now tied-for-first in program history for career singles matches won (104) with former teammate Niklas Karcz.

After grabbing the first set 6-4, Day fell in the ensuing two sets 4-6, 1-6, as the freshman was thwarted by Dickson in the No. 2 slot.

While battling in the No. 3 singles spot, Wasner was bested 5-7, 4-6 by PNW's Chicano Melero.

Knowles and Hill both collected wins, as the freshman topped Martins 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 4 spot, with the sophomore prevailed 6-2, 6-2 over Sroka while competing in the No. 6 position.

Klaus fell in a hard-fought match with Lanusse 7-5, 5-7, 3-6 in the No. 5 singles spot.

The Wayne State men's tennis squad will next be in action on Friday, April 18, as the Green and Gold will play host to Ferris State University.
