UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (17-16 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) led a hitless Saginaw Valley State (20-11 overall, 5-4 GLIAC) 2-0 through three innings on Friday afternoon in the teams' series opener. However, the Cardinals proceeded to score nine runs on seven hits over the course of the next six innings to win it 9-2. WSU and SVSU will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
Wayne State scratched both of its runs across in the top of the second inning.
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]) singled in
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. [Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC]) and
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) followed suit by bringing in McGuire.
Saginaw Valley State then responded with one score in the fourth, a pair in the fifth, two more in the sixth, three in the seventh, and another in the eighth.
On the mound, starter
Will DeMasse (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) was better in his six and one-third innings pitched than the final score indicates. DeMasse gave up six runs, only three earned, on four hits with five walks, two strikeouts and an even 100 pitches.
First out of the bullpen,
Carson Tehan (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich S.S.) recorded two outs while surrendering three earned runs on three hits with two free passes and 20 pitches.
Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) then took care of business with a perfect frame on just nine pitches in the eighth.
