Baseball Earns Doubleheader Split Against Saginaw Valley State

The Warriors tied their season high for runs scored against a GLIAC opponent with 13 in game two.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Following a 4-1 loss to Saginaw Valley State (21-12 overall, 6-5 GLIAC) in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at SVSU Baseball Complex, the Wayne State University baseball squad (18-17 overall, 7-3 GLIAC) recovered to handle the Cardinals, 13-2, in the second game between the two teams.

GAME ONE
The Cardinals tallied four runs in the opening three innings and held on the rest of the way for the three-run victory.

WSU's offensive highlight of the contest happened in the third inning when Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) homered to right field off SVSU starting pitcher Jack Decker.  The home run was the sophomore's fourth of the year and first since the second game of a twinbill at Florida Southern on March 22.

The Warriors' other hit came via a Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]) single to start the top of the second.  McGuire added a walk in the seventh inning to reach base twice in three plate appearances.

On the mound, Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) earned the start and pitched the first four innings.  Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville [Jackson CC]) relieved Nazelli and tossed the final two frames.  The senior struck out four Saginaw Valley State batters and did not allow any hits, runs, or walks in his appearance.

GAME TWO
Wayne State starter Braylon Laroo (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) put together a pitching showcase in WSU's 11-run triumph in game two.  The freshman rebounded from a two-run first inning by SVSU to retire the next 21 Cardinals in order for a complete-game win on 95 pitches.  Laroo improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory and recorded a new career-best in innings pitched (seven) and punchouts (six) in the effort.  He allowed just one hit, which came to the second batter of the game.

The Warriors' 13 runs scored tied the team's best output against a fellow GLIAC opponent (also on March 29 at Purdue Northwest).  WSU did much of its damage in just two innings by tallying five runs in the third and seven in the fourth.  Three singles and five walks, along with a Saginaw Valley State error, helped to plate the five runs in the third inning.

The fourth was highlighted by a home run from Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central [Oakland]), which was his third HR of the season and first since a blast against Minnesota-Duluth in the second game of a doubleheader on March 15.  WSU reached 10 runs when Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) cleared the bases with a double to left center in that same frame.

Eight of the nine Warriors in the starting lineup registered a hit when the dust settled, while Hill, the only Warrior without one, instead provided four walks to set a new team-best for the campaign.

WSU will look for a series split in the four-game road series on Sunday afternoon.  First pitch from University Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
