Women's Tennis Claims 7-0 Victory at Roosevelt

CHICAGO -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (9-3 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) prevailed 7-0 at Roosevelt University (6-12 overall, 0-6 GLIAC) in the inaugural meeting between the teams on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors jumped to a great start, winning all three matches in doubles to claim the first point of the contest.

Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) topped Sophie Christie and Teodora Petrica 6-1 while competing in the No. 1 doubles spot.

The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles squads claimed 6-1 victories as well, as the duo of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) downed Malena Moya and Vavara Ogorodnikova, while the pairing of Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) defeated the RU pair of Fabiola Rivas and Ximena Mercado.

SINGLES
Wayne State's women's tennis team continued to find success in singles competition as well.

In the No. 1 spot, Ruyssen prevailed 6-1, 6-2 over Petrica, while Arafat collected a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ogorodnikova while battling in the No. 2 position.

Gorgidze and Weekes added a pair of wins as well.  The redshirt junior earned a 6-0, 6-1 win against Christie, with the junior triumphed 6-2, 6-3 over Rivas.

Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) and Szpakowska rounded the match for the Green and Gold in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions respectively.  Uzcategui handled business by way of a 6-0, 6-0 win against Mercado as Szpakowska defeated Moya 6-0, 6-1.

UP NEXT
The WSU women's tennis team will return to the court on Saturday, April 12, as the squad travels to Purdue University Northwest.
