Women's Tennis Downs Purdue Northwest 7-0 in Final Road Match of Regular Season

GRIFFITH, Ind. -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (10-3 overall, 7-0 GLIAC) captured a 7-0 victory at Purdue University Northwest (5-15 overall, 2-5 GLIAC) on Saturday.  WSU improves its overall ledger to 10-3 while remaining unbeaten in conference action.

With the win, the Green and Gold has clinched at least a share of the GLIAC regular season title with a chance to claim sole possession of first place in the squad's upcoming match against Ferris State University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors claimed a trio of wins in doubles, sweeping the Pride and earning the first point of the match.

In the No. 1 position, the steady pairing of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) continued to roll as the duo topped Tamiya Lintz and Elisoa Andriantefihasina 6-1.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) posted a 6-0 victory while competing against Alma Vazquez Rioja and Haizea Lopez as the duos competed against each other in the No. 2 doubles spot.

Rounding the Green and Gold's doubles play was the pairing of Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa).  The duo, in the No. 3 slot, downed Hayley Tsuen and Salma Raslan 6-1.

SINGLES
Seemingly carrying their success from doubles competition into singles, Ruyssen and Gorgidze each nabbed a victory, as the graduate student toppled Lintz 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles spot, while the redshirt junior triumphed 6-4, 6-3 over Andriantefihasina in the No. 2 position.

Weekes and Beaulieu were the next two WSU student-athletes to finish.  In the No. 4 slot, Weekes prevailed 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1) over Lopez, while the sophomore defeated Tsuen 6-1, 6-4 (4-7), 11-9.

In a roller coaster of a match in the No. 5 position, Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) grabbed an early lead, claiming the first set 6-0.  Her opponent, Vazquez Rioja, roared back to win in the second set 7-5.  In the third-set tiebreaker, Uzcategui found a way to win, as the redshirt junior downed the PNW student-athlete 10-8.

Arafat grabbed an early 3-0 advantage over Raslan, before the match was suspended, awarding  Wayne State a win by default.
