Men's Tennis Defeats Ferris State 5-2 Behind Drenth's Record-Setting Day

DETROIT -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (14-6 overall, 5-2 GLIAC) topped No. 30-ranked Ferris State University (11-7 overall, 5-2 GLIAC) 5-2 on Friday as Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) sets WSU school record for career singles matches won with 105.

Prior to the match, the WSU men's tennis program honored its lone senior, Cedric Drenth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold tallied the first point of the match and nabbed an early advantage, sweeping the visitors in doubles.

In the No. 1 doubles spot, Drenth and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) downed Kevin Kovacs and Erik Kovacs 6-2, while leading the entire way.

George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) captured a win as well, prevailing 6-1 over Kacper Pasielak and Jose Andres Perez Alarcon in the No. 2 position.

Closing out doubles play was the duo of Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]).  The WSU pairing topped Felipe Iser and Alessandro Santangelo 6-4.

SINGLES
After trailing 5-1 in the first set, Drenth rallied back, winning the next six games to nab set one.  The senior continued to find success, prevailing in the second set 7-5 and becoming WSU's all-time leader in career singles matches won (105), passing Niklas Karcz.

Wasner collected a win in the No. 3 position, downing FSU's Erik Kovacs 6-1, 6-3.

Hill and Klaus both nabbed wins as well while competing in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.  Klaus finished first, topping Adrian Catahan 7-6 (13-11), 6-3.  Hill prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 over Jose Andres Perez Alarcon.

Day, in the No. 2 spot, fell 4-6, 6-0, 3-6 to Alessandro Santangelo, while Knowles was bested 2-6, 6-4, 4-6 by Felipe Iser.

Both Max Faniel (Theux, Belgium / Collège Saint-François-Xavier S.S.) and Cole Anderson (Novi, Mich.) competed in exhibition matches against the Bulldogs.  The freshman downed Pasielak 7-5, 6-4, while the sophomore thwarted Milo Leuenberger 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9).

FROM HEAD COACH BRYAN MORROW
"I am very proud of how the guys performed today.  They had to fight through some adversity with inconsistent weather, and I am pleased with the way that they played.  Congratulations to Cedric (Drenth) for breaking the school's singles wins record (105 wins).  He is absolutely the bar for Wayne State tennis going forward.  Good way to end the regular season, and we are excited for the GLIAC Tournament as a No. 2 seed."

UP NEXT
The Wayne State men's tennis squad's next task is the GLIAC Tournament, where the Warriors received the No. 2 seed along with a first-round bye.  WSU will face the winner of the match between Ferris State and Lake Superior State.  All matches will be played at the Midland Tennis Center with the second round being played on Saturday, April 26.
