Softball Wins Game One, Falls in Game Two Against Roosevelt

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (19-22 overall, 8-10 GLIAC) split a conference doubleheader at home on Saturday against GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt University (11-23 overall, 5-11 GLIAC).  WSU won the opener 5-3, while the Lakers took the nightcap 6-2.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors wasted little time grabbing a 1-0 advantage as sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) laced the second pitch in the bottom of the first down the left field line for a triple.  Forman scored on an RBI ground out off the bat of freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.).

Wayne State extended its lead with a four-run third inning.  Senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) had a leadoff double and advanced to third on a fly out by Forman.  A double down the left field line by freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) made it 2-0.  DeWitt was hit with a 1-0 offering.  Freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) was batting with a 2-2 count when her fly out was rescinded due to a pitcher timing violation.  Koopman then blasted the next pitch over the left centerfield fence for a 5-0 WSU lead.

In the top of the sixth the first two RU batters were retired before a walk on a 3-2 pitch due to an illegal pitch.  Back-to-back singles loaded the bases, which were the first two hits of the game for the Lakers.  After a 3-2 pitch was fouled off, Wayne State hurler Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) just missed a called third strike which resulted in a bases loaded walk.  Brynn Dvoracek followed with a two-run single to cut the WSU margin to two at 5-3 with RU having two runners in scoring position.  Long retired the last four Roosevelt batters to earn the complete game victory.

IN THE CIRCLE
Loong (5-6) allowed three earned runs on three hits in seven innings with six strikeouts to two walks.  She only faced 26 batters.

Riley Czarnecki (8-5) allowed five earned runs on four hits and two walks in three innings of work.  Rebecca Urbaniak allowed just two hits in her three scoreless innings of work.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Williams and senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) were the only two WSU hitters to reach base twice as each had a hit and a walk.  Koopman's fifth home run of the campaign was the big blow offensively.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Brynn Dvoracek had a two-run single.

GAME TWO RECAP
Roosevelt scored three times in the top of the first with only one ball being hit out of the infield.  Ella Dvoracek had a bunt single and Kendall Pearson followed with a swinging bunt single.  A Warrior misplay on a sac bunt loaded the bases with zero outs.  After a strikeout, Urbaniak had a two-run single to deep right with Athena Pomele-Pen scoring from first on a couple of throws to the wrong base to make it 3-0.

Wayne State scored an unearned run in the sixth as senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) had a leadoff double, and scored from second when a two-out ground ball was misplayed.

The Lakers tallied three insurance runs in the top of the seventh as the first three balls did not leave the infield.  Pomele-Pen had a two-run double and Brynn Dvoracek plated Pomele-Pen with her own double.

Junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single.  She advanced to second on a pinch-hit single by DeWitt and scored on a single by Josephson to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings.  She struck out six and walked two.  Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) retired two of the three batters she faced, both on strikeouts swinging.

Kailey Hancock (5-8) limited WSU to two runs (one earned) on seven hits in seven innings.  She struck out four and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Josephson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Maddie Hool had two hits and run scored.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Ella Dvoracek was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Pomele-Pen had two hits and two RBI as did Urbaniak.
