Softball Drops Pair on Senior Day

Warriors fall in two low-scoring affairs.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (19-24 overall, 8-12 GLIAC) dropped both games of a GLIAC doubleheader on Senior Day at Gary L. Bryce Field to the visiting Parkside Rangers (18-18 overall, 9-9 GLIAC).  UWP took the opener 3-2 in 10 innings, then claimed the nightcap 3-1.

GAME ONE RECAP
The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) had a two-out single up the middle.  Sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) laced an 0-1 offering over the right fielder's head for an RBI triple plating Josephson with the game's first run.  Freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) had an infield single up the middle, which the Ranger second baseman made a nice stop to keep the ball in the infield.

Parkside evened the score with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.  Megan Medlin had a leadoff double and moved to third when Toni Rodriguez advanced to second on a WSU miscue.  A sacrifice fly by Rylee Baetz scored Medlin, with Rodriguez scoring on a fielder's choice.

Wayne State had two runners on in the sixth with one out but could not plate the go-ahead run.  The Warriors had their second batter in both the eighth and ninth innings reach base, but a key hit was not forthcoming.

In the 10th with the international tiebreaker rule in place, 2024 GLIAC Player of the Year Mia Johnson executed a sacrifice bunt, with the placed runner scoring on a single by Haley Remington.  In the bottom of the frame, WSU was unable to convert a sacrifice bunt and stranded its 11th runner of the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits in 10 innings.  She struck out three and walked three.

Ellie Curtis (5-3) limited Wayne State to two earned runs on 11 hits in 10 innings.  She struck out six and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Forman went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and Long each had two hits.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Medlin had two of UWP's five hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
Parkside scored all of its runs in the top of the third on a leadoff double by Remington, a Warrior error, and three consecutive hits, including a two-run single by Rodriguez and an RBI double by Baetz.

Wayne State scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh as freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) had a leadoff double down the left field line and senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) followed with a double off the third base bag plating DeWitt.  Three consecutive fly outs ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits in seven innings.  She struck out three and walked three.

Amber Smith (2-4) went the distance for Parkside and allowed just the one earned run on four hits in seven innings.  She struck out one and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
WSU had two singles and the two aforementioned doubles.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Remington went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will step away from GLIAC play and host for league rival Tiffin for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15.
