Women's Tennis Claims GLIAC Regular Season Title with 7-0 Win over Ferris State

DETROIT -- The No. 28-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (11-3 overall, 8-0 GLIAC) triumphed 7-0 over No. 45-ranked Ferris State University (11-7 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) Friday afternoon.  The Warriors finish the season with a perfect 8-0 ledger in GLIAC matches, making it two consecutive years with without a blemish in conference action.

With the win, the WSU women's tennis team is the 2025 outright GLIAC regular season champion.

Prior to the start of the competition, the Wayne State women's tennis program honored lone senior and four-year letter winner Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]).

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold once more swept all three doubles contests to establish an early advantage in the match.

In the No. 1 position, Ruyssen and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) battled against FSU's Kennedy Dumas and Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer.  The WSU pairing prevailed 6-4 over the Ferris State student-athletes.

While competing in the No. 2 doubles spot, Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) downed Yara Madi and Katherine Earnest 6-2.

The duo of Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) topped Ayva Johnstone and Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles slot.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold continued to perform at a high level in singles competition.

Ruyssen capped her senior day celebration by way of a 6-2, 6-1 win while competing against Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer in the No. 1 singles position.

Arafat and Gorgidze added wins as well, as the Junior had an impressive showing in the No. 2 slot, defeating Madi 6-0, 6-1, while the redshirt junior shined with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dumas in the No. 3 position.

In the No. 4 and No. 6 slots, Weekes topped Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer 6-3, 6-4, while Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) thwarted Johnstone 6-0, 6-1.

Beaulieu wrapped the singles competition with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 come-from-behind victory over Earnest in the No. 5 singles position.

UP NEXT
The Wayne State women's tennis team receives a first-round bye in the GLIAC Tournament and will face the winner of the first round match between Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State.  The first round of the tournament is scheduled for Friday, April 25, with the second round to follow on Saturday, April 26.
