Softball Falls Twice To #21-Tiffin

Dragons win 7-1 and 10-4.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (19-26 overall) concluded the home portion of its 2025 schedule with an in-region non-conference doubleheader against Tiffin University (32-10 overall) on Tuesday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field.  The Dragons won the opener 7-1 with two runs in the first and five runs in the fifth.  TU claimed the nightcap 10-4 scoring runs in five different innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
Tiffin grabbed an early 2-0 lead just seven pitches into the contest on a double by Reagan Mengerink and a two-run home run by Jessica Miller.  WSU starting pitcher Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) settled down retiring 10 of 12 TU batters.  

In the fifth a leadoff infield single by Lydia Kobie, a one-out bunt single by Tori Abel along with a passed ball and a double steal plated one run.  Mengerink contributed an RBI single as did Aubrie Harper.  Molly Koesters completed the TU scoring with a two-run single.

WSU scored its lone run in the sixth as senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) drew a one-out walk.  After a fielder's choice, sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) laced a two-out double to left center scoring junior Danielle Fick (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central).

IN THE CIRCLE
Koopman (3-1) allowed seven earned run on 10 hits in five innings.  She struck out three and walked one.  Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) held the Dragons to one hit in two innings with two strikeouts.

Ella Esterby (12-5) went the distance for Tiffin.  She allowed one run on one hit with six strikeouts to two walks.  She faced 25 batters.

Forman had the hit, an RBI double.

Mengerink went 4-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Miller and Harper each had two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
In a bit of Déjà vu, Tiffin scored two runs in the top of the first in just two batters.  A leadoff walk was followed by an RBI triple for Miller, who scored on a throwing error on the play.  

WSU tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the second as sophomore Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) drew a one-out walk.  After a fielder's choice, Molly's twin Mia worked a seven-pitch walk.  Josephson earned a wind aided two-run double to right center in a ball that kept flying away from the right fielder.

The Dragons answered with three runs in the top of the third on four hits and a walk.  The big blow was a two-out, two-run single by Kobie with Kylee Kleiner following with an RBI single to left.

Forman smacked her team-leading ninth home run leading off the bottom of the frame to make it 5-3.

Tiffin added one in the fifth on a solo home run by Maci Hear, her team-high 10th round tripper of the season.

The Dragons added two runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Miller and an RBI single by Koesters.

Wayne State scored once in the sixth after back-to-back singles by Maddie Hool and Mia Hool to start the frame.  Maddie scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior Lauren Fritz (Commerce, Mich. / Waterford Kettering [Oakland CC])as TU second baseman Tori McPherson made a diving stop on a ball hit up the middle.

TU tallied two runs in the seventh on an RBI triple by Kleiner, who then scored on a ground out.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junio Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in five innings.  She struck out one and walked three.  Freshman Montgomery Pepin (Gladstone, Mich.) recorded the final six outs allowing four earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

Isabella O'Brien went three innings for Tiffin and surrendered three earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts to three walks.  Lexi Key (9-5) earned the win in relief limiting WSU to one run on five hits in four innings.  She struck out one and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Josephson was on base three times with two hits and a walk.  Maddie Hool had two hits and scored twice.

LEADING THE DRAGONS
Miller and Kleiner each had three hits and two RBI, with Miller scoring three times.

UP NEXT
With Friday's scheduled doubleheader at Ferris State being moved to April 22nd (3 pm start in Big Rapids), WSU's next twinbill is Saturday at Davenport.  The Warriors doubleheader vs. Ohio Dominican slated for April 22nd is being canceled for this season.
