Softball To Entertain Tiffin On Tuesday

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (19-24 overall, 8-12 GLIAC) will entertain former GLIAC foe Tiffin University (30-10 overall, 14-2 G-MAC) for an in-region non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday (April 15).  First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
Wayne State has a 26-17 advantage in the all-time series which began in 2001.  The Warriors are 5-7 at home vs. Tiffin.  The only two meetings in Detroit in the last 11 years came in 2018 with the Dragons winning 2-1 and 4-0.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) returned to the starting lineup last Wednesday after missing 26 straight games with an injury suffered in the first game of the spring break trip last month.  She is batting .500 (20-for-40) on the season with a .574 on-base percentage.

Freshmen Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) are batting .361 and .339, respectively.  Koopman leads the squad with 34 RBI, while DeWitt is tied for the team lead in both doubles (7) and triples (4).  Sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) has a team-high eight home runs and leads the squad with a .612 slugging percentage.

Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) leads the pitching corps with nine wins, a 3.67 ERA, and 67 strikeouts.  Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) has five wins, two saves and 69 strikeouts.  Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) has recorded 45 strikeouts in 61 innings.

Nicole Tines is in her fourth season guiding the Warriors and has led WSU to 19 wins this year, second-most in the last six years.

LEADING THE DRAGONS
TU is led by head coach Paige McMenemy, who is in her fourth season.  She played collegiately at Akron and Ashland.  During her time with the Eagles, she pitched once at WSU falling 3-2 on April 23, 2017.

The Dragons are batting .323 as a team with 105 extra-base hits (65 doubles, 15 triples and 25 home runs).  Freshman Jessica Miller leads the squad in batting (.398), doubles (17), on-base percentage (.463) and slugging percentage (.662).  Senior Maci Head has smacked a team-leading nine home runs, while sophomore Reagan Mengerink has a team-best 38 RBI.  Freshman Tori Abel is 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts.

McMenemy has a solid 1-2-3 pitching rotation.  Sophomore Ella Esterby is 11-5 with a 1.43 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 93.1 innings, after playing her freshman year at Kent State.  Freshman Isabella O'Brien has a 9-0 mark with 2.27 ERA, and 71 strikeouts in 74 innings.  Sophomore Lexi Key has an 8-5 record with a 2.60 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 70 innings.
