Softball Wins Twice At Davenport

Warriors win 5-1 and 11-3.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (21-26 overall, 10-12 GLIAC) rebounded from a tough week by winning twice at Davenport University (17-27 overall, 8-16 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.  WSU won the opener 5-1 behind solo home runs from Logan Forman and Hunter Near, then took the nightcap 11-3 in five innings as Mady Ruczynski drove in five.  The pitching was superb allowing just two earned runs in 12 innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors began their eight-game road trip by scoring once in each of the first two innings on solo home runs, then added three insurance runs in the top of the third.

Sophomore catcher Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) walloped the first pitch she saw (and just the seventh pitch of the game) over the left field fence.

Freshman shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) smacked the first pitch she saw leading off the second over the center field fence.

Senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) reached on a throwing error to begin the third.  After a fly out, senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) drew a five-pitch walk.  With two outs, Near plated Josephson with an RBI single and freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) followed with a two-run single to make it 5-0.

Meanwhile, WSU sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) retired the first eight Panther batters of the game before two singles sandwiched around a walk loaded the bases.  A strikeout swinging ended the third.  Long notched three consecutive fly ball outs after a leadoff double in the fourth.

DU scored its lone run in the fifth on a two-out single by Brooke Bernt followed by an RBI double from Kailyne Luna.  Long then recorded four straight outs until the seventh.  Davenport had three singles to load the bases in the first four batters, before a foul out and strikeout ended the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (6-7) allowed just one run on eight hits in seven innings.  She struck out six and walked one.

Hannah Tahaney (6-10) allowed two earned runs on two hits while recording three outs.  Julia Perry worked 1.2 innings and allowed three unearned runs on three hits and a walk.  Hailey Whisman tossed the final 4.1 innings and limited WSU to two hits, while striking out a pair.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Near and DeWitt each had two hits and two RBI, with Near scoring twice.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Bernt and Lune each had two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State tallied six runs in the top of the first and never looked back in the nightcap.

Josephson and Forman both walked and O'Donnell advanced both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.  Freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) delivered an RBI single into left center and Near had an infield hit to load the bases.  DeWitt recorded an RBI single, before sophomore Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) greeted reliever Whisman with an RBI single to make it 3-0.  With two outs, senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) blasted a three-run double to left center.

The Warriors added to their advantage in the third with a five-run frame.  Near and DeWitt both walked and moved up a base on a one-out fly out by junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).  Ruczynski drove into two more runs with her second double of the contest.  Josephson greeted Tahaney with an RBI double, before Forman launched her second home run of the day and her team-leading 11th round tripper of the season.

Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College] retired six of the first seven Panther batters she faced.  DU loaded the bases in the third with no outs on a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk, but Fisher did her best Houdini impersonation by getting an infield fly out, a foul out and a strikeout to end the threat unscathed.

Davenport did score three times in the fourth on a leadoff home run by Savanna Disbrow and a pair of unearned runs.

The Panthers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Fisher recorded a fly out and a force out to end the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Fisher (10-9) limited DU to three runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings.  She struck out two and walked one.

Mariah Stines (1-3) started for Davenport and surrendered five earned runs on three hits and two walks, while recording one out.  Whisman gave up four earned runs in 2.1 innings on three hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Tahaney allowed two hits and two earned runs while getting one out in the three batters she faced.  Perry worked 2.0 innings allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Ruczynski went 3-for-3 with five RBI, while six other WSU batters had one hit apiece.  The five RBI for Ruczynski is tied-for-fifth most in a single game by a WSU batter in the last 24 years.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Bernt went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
