Men's Tennis Advances to GLIAC Tournament Championship After 4-3 Win Over Ferris State

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 2-seeded Wayne State University men's tennis squad (15-6) downed No. 3-seeded Ferris State University (12-8) 4-3 in the second round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Saturday.  WSU will face Grand Valley State University (15-2) on Sunday, April 27, for the tournament championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Bulldogs commanded the early advantage, quickly nabbing two doubles matches to earn the contest's first lead.

While battling in the No. 2 slot, George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) fell 6-4 to FSU's pairing of Alessandro Santangelo and Felipe Iser.

Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) competed against Milo Leuenberger and Kacper Pasielak in the No. 3 position, with the Green and Gold duo being bested 6-1.

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) represented the Warriors in the No. 1 spot, facing off with Adrian Catahan and Jose Perez.  The match went incomplete following the results of the other two matches.

SINGLES
Wayne State found its footing in the singles competition, as Drenth and Day collected a pair of wins.  The GLIAC Player of the Year bested Kevin Kovacs 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles position, while the talented freshman downed Santangelo 6-3, 6-4.

Hill earned a crucial win in the No. 5 spot, as the sophomore collected a much-needed 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) triumph over Jose Perez.

Knowles (No. 4 slot) and Klaus (No. 6 position) each fell in their singles matches, with the freshman being bested 6-2, 6-1 by Iser and the graduate student falling 7-6, 6-2 to Catahan.

With the match tied 3-3, Wasner found himself in a third-set tied breaker with Erik Kovacs.  The pressure was high, as both sides understood that they had a chance to send their squad the the GLIAC Tournament Championship. The freshman did not allow the moment to phase him, besting his foe 7-6 (7-3) and pushing the Green and Gold to a spot in the championship match.
