Box Score MIDLAND, Mich. -- The top-seeded Wayne State University women's tennis team (12-3) prevailed 4-0 over Saginaw Valley State University (6-12) in the second round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Saturday. WSU will compete against No. 2-seeded Grand Valley State University on Sunday, April 27.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
Wayne State won two of the three matches in doubles to claim the first lead of the contest.
Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and
Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) battled against Adriana Barrio and Nicoletta Diamantopoulos in the No. 1 doubles position, with the WSU studnet-athletes prevailing 7-5 over the pairing for Saginaw Valley State after trailing 4-5.
Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and
Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) found success as well, topping the duo of Amelia Dickson and Anastasia Diamantopoulos 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
In the No. 2 slot,
Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and
Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) competed against Lydia Liong and Elizabeth Stuart. The Cardinal squad triumphed 6-3.
SINGLES
Arafat, Gorgidze, and Beaulieu all collected wins in singles to clinch the match.
The First Team All-GLIAC junior thwarted the efforts of Dickson, besting the SVSU student-athlete 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 position.
In the No. 3 spot, Gorgidze continued to impress, defeating Liong 6-0, 6-2.
Beaulieu wrapped the scoring for WSU in the No. 5 position, as the sophomore downed Stuart 6-0, 6-2.
Weekes (6-0) and
Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) (6-3) both held leads after one set, while Ruyssen trailed 2-6, before the contests halted with WSU prevailing.
