Softball Notches First Sweep At Ferris State Since 2015

Warriors clinch GLIAC Tournament berth.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (23-26 overall, 12-12 GLIAC) assured themselves a spot in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament by winning twice (5-2 and 3-2) on Tuesday afternoon at Ferris State University (24-16 overall, 13-11 GLIAC).  It was WSU's first sweep against the Bulldogs in Big Rapids since notching 9-2 and 9-1 triumphs on April 15, 2015.  The pair of victories also extended the Warriors road winning streak to four games (including this past Saturday's sweep at Davenport).  The last time Wayne State won at least four consecutive road conference games was April 11-15, 2017, with a game two 10-2 win at Tiffin, followed by sweeps at Walsh (2-0 and 3-1) and Lake Erie (3-0 and 4-2).

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU scored once in the top of the first on back-to-back one-out doubles by sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) and freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.).

The Bulldogs responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame on a leadoff single, a one-out RBI triple by Alexis Kozlowski and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Emily Killion.

The Warriors left two runners on base in the second, one in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.  Meanwhile, FSU stranded two runners in the second and fourth innings, and one in the third so the score remained 2-1 heading to the seventh.

Junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) reached on a muffed throw to start the frame.  A sacrifice bunt by senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) moved her into scoring position, where she was plated on an RBI double by senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central).  Forman followed with an RBI triple to put Wayne State ahead 3-2.  Freshman Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) had a two-out RBI single and advanced to second on a fielding error in the outfield.  Senior Jessie O'Donnel (Campbellville, Ont.) had an infield single that scored Near.

FSU went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) improved to 3-9 by limiting the Bulldogs to two earned runs on five hits in seven innings.  She walked two and did not strikeout a batter.

FSU's Catherine O'Donohue (8-4) allowed nine hits and five runs (two earned) in seven innings.  She struck out one and walked one.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State broke a scoreless draw with a run in the top of the third as Ruczynski had a leadoff single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josephson.  Forman then laced the first pitch of her at bat into right center plating Ruczynski with the game's first run.

Ferris State answered in the bottom of the frame on a leadoff walk, a one-out single and an RBI single by Maddie Gkekas.

WSU snapped the 1-1 deadlock in the fifth on back-to-back two-out doubles by Forman and Koopman to make it 2-1.  Pinch-runner Lauren Fritz (Commerce, Mich. / Waterford Kettering [Oakland CC]) was able to score from second on an infield single by Near to extended the Warrior lead to 3-1.

The Bulldogs had one runner on base in the sixth and scored once in the seventh to pull within 3-2 but WSU junior pitcher Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) was able to induce a fly out to center to end the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Fisher (11-9) held the Bulldogs to two earned runs on five hits and three walks in seven innings.  She struck out three.
