Softball Begins Busy Final Week With Tuesday Twinbill At Ferris State

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (21-26 overall, 10-12 GLIAC) will begin the final week of the regular season with a make-up doubleheader at Ferris State University (24-14 overall, 13-9 GLIAC) on Tuesday.  First pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
WSU holds a 92-53 lead in the all-time series dating back to 1982.  The squads have split the last four meetings following a nine-game winning streak (April 29, 2022-April 26, 2024) by the Bulldogs.  The Warriors have lost six straight in Big Rapids.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) is batting .431 (22-for-51) on the season with a .525 on-base percentage.  Freshmen Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) are batting .362 and .328, respectively.  Koopman leads the squad with 35 RBI, while DeWitt is tied for the team lead in both doubles (7) and triples (4).  Sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) has a team-high 11 home runs and leads the squad with a .664 slugging percentage.  Senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) batted .500 last week (4-for-8) with two doubles and five RBI.

Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) leads the pitching corps with 10 wins and a 3.50 ERA, while sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) has six wins and two saves.  Long has 75 strikeouts with Fisher recording 71 strikeouts.  Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) has recorded 46 strikeouts in 66 innings.

Nicole Tines is in her fourth season guiding the Warriors and has led WSU to 21 wins this year, second-most in the last six years.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
FSU, who was mentioned among the top 10 teams in the region last week by the NCAA, is led by first baseman Alexis Kozlowski.  She is batting .353 (42-for-119) with 13 extra-base hits, including team-high totals of four home runs and 34 RBI.  Jayden Marlatt is hitting .395 (17-for-43) in 15 games started.  Maddie Gkekas leads the Bulldogs with 13 stolen bases and a .437 on-base percentage.  She is tied for the team lead with 16 walks with Kozlowski and Emma Gillard.  

Third-year head coach Jake Schumann has primarily used three pitchers this spring.  Cecelia Bell is 8-4 with a 2.47 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 93.2 innings, while Catherine O'Donohue has an 8-3 record with a 3.20 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 76.2. innings.  Ella Covill-Marter has compiled an 8-5 mark with a 3.26 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 73 innings.

NCAA NATIONAL RANKINGS
WSU leads the GLIAC and ranks 46th nationally in sacrifice bunts with 34, and 37th nationally in triples (15).  Freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) is 48th nationally in sac bunts per game (0.22 / 8 in 38 games).

Wayne State has played the 37th toughest schedule (.554 / 1070-860) according to the NCAA, out of 277 NCAA Division 2 softball schools.

Among active NCAA Division 2 players, Fisher is 23rd in strikeouts/per game (6.21), 27th in strikeouts (413), 33rd in innings pitched (465.7) and 43rd in games started (72), including this year at WSU following two years at Notre Dame College.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play its final four contests of the regular season this weekend with doubleheaders at Purdue Northwest on Friday and Grand Valley State on Saturday.
