DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (12-15 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) is set to host brand new league member Roosevelt (7-21 overall, 1-7 GLIAC) in a four-game series on Friday through Sunday at Harwell Field. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday (1 p.m.) before a single game on both Saturday and Sunday, each of which will also begin at 1 p.m.
Roosevelt is coached by fifth-year leader Jason Becker, who is 109-103 overall in his four-plus seasons at the helm for a .514 winning percentage. Prior to Chicago, Becker spent nine seasons down the road at Robert Morris University where he racked up an overall record of 263-173 (.603). That gives him a mark of 372-276 (.574) in 13+ campaigns as a head coach.
This season, starting on the offensive side of things, Roosevelt is hitting .268 as a team. Four primary everyday players are contributing to that total including James Berry (.400 batting average), Kekoa Ogawa (.388), Jack Kieffer (.284), and sophomore Sebastian Casillas (.284), the first three of which are seniors. Berry also leads the Lakers in runs scored (22), doubles (8), triples (4), total bases (63), slugging percentage (.573), hit-by-pitches (8), and stolen bases (9-for-12). Luke Ulbert is on top of the home run category (4), Ogawa has driven in 18 with 15 walks and an OPS of 1.048.
On the mound, Roosevelt comes into this series with a team ERA of 8.32. Fifth year Omar Abuelhija has accumulated more innings than anyone on the team with 30 and a 7.50 ERA to show for it. Seven different pitchers have garnered a victory while junior Keegan Bobbitt ranks first in strikeouts with 28. Freshman Kaden Foran is right on his heels in that category with 27 to his name.
Roosevelt has dropped eight of its last nine games, which includes a current five-game skid. The Lakers have gone just 2-14 in true road games so far this spring.
