Houghton, Mich. -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (8-3 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) earned a 6-1 road victory over Michigan Tech University (4-6 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warrior's top-two pairings prevailed in doubles as Wayne State claimed an early advantage over the Huskies.
Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and
Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) competed in the No. 1 position, where the duo bested Alexandra Nikonenko and Caoimhe McDonnell 6-1.
In the No. 2 spot,
Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and
Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) thwarted the efforts of Anamarija Ukic and Efthymia Vasiliki Konstantatou, as the WSU pairing won 6-1 over the MTU student-athletes.
Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) and
Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) fell 6-7 (12-14) to Chiara Heinz and Emily Rose while competing in the No. 3 slot.
SINGLES
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Ruyssen and Gorgidze found success in singles competition as well, as the graduate student downed Nikonenko 6-1, 6-4, while the redshirt junior collected a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Ukic.
Arafat bested McDonnell 6-2, 6-0, while competing in the No. 2 singles position, pushing her record to 9-2 this season, with all of her matches taking place in the No. 2 spot.
Weekes and
Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) added wins as well. The Junior, while battling in the No. 4 singles position, defeated Rose 6-4, 6-2. Uzcategui posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bella Bigari.
Beaulieu, competing in the No. 5 singles slot, fell 7-5, 4-6, 6-10 to Heinz.

The Wayne State University women's tennis squad will be back in action on Friday, April 5, as the Warriors will face Roosevelt University on the road.
