Softball Splits To Complete First Half of League Play

WSU rallied to win the opener 3-2, before falling 4-3 in game two.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (18-19 overall, 7-7 GLIAC) concluded the first half of the league schedule with a split against Purdue Northwest (8-25-1 overall, 3-11 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field.  The Warriors scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win game one 3-2, but the visiting Pride tallied the final three runs to claim the nightcap 4-3.

GAME ONE RECAP
PNW scored twice in the top of the fourth to snap a scoreless draw.  A one-out single by Giuliana Girodano followed by an RBI double from Hannah Rafferty-Flatter plated the game's first run.  A two-out triple by Kylie Madura made it 2-0.

WSU scored once in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out hit by pitch of freshman Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) with senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) smacking a double to left center to put two runners in scoring position.  After a walk to sophomore Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) loaded the bases, junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) hit a sacrifice fly scoring Near.

The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh.  O'Donnell drew a five-pitch walk to start the frame and was safe at second on Molly Hool's sacrifice bunt.  Maddie Hool advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.  Senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) hit a 1-0 pitch down the right field line for a game-tying single, while Molly Hool scored the game-winning run as the throw from the right fielder eluded everyone around the plate.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed two earned runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings with two strikeouts.  Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) earned the win in relief by blanking Purdue Northwest on one hit over the final two innings.

Hailie Charmat (1-6) went the distance for PNW and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in 6.1 innings.  She struck out three and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
O'Donnell reached base twice via a double and a walk and scored once.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Kylie Dugan went 3-for-4, while both Emma Fair and Olivia Hernandez had a single and a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP
WSU took an early 1-0 lead as sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) hit the second pitch in the bottom of the first over the centerfield wall for her third home run of the weekend and team-leading eighth of the season.

Purdue Northwest tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third on a leadoff single by Madura and a two-out error by the Warriors.

Wayne State responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.  Back-to-back singles by Ruczynski and Forman started the innings.  A pop out double play almost derailed the half-inning, but Near and freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) posted consecutive RBI singles to put WSU ahead 3-2.

PNW evened the score in the top of the fifth with two unearned runs on an error, a single, a sac bunt, an RBI groundout by Hernandez followed by an RBI single Darcy Barkauskas.

The Warriors were unable to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth despite a leadoff walk to Forman.

The Pride scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the sixth.  A great play by junior pitcher Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) recorded the first out of the inning but a walk preceded a sliding catch in foul territory by Near for the second out.  However, an infield single by Dugan was followed by an RBI single from Grace Wilson.

IN THE CIRCLE
Koopman pitched the first three innings allowing just an unearned run on five hits with one strikeout.  Fisher hurled the final four innings allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Jordyn Roop started for PNW and surrendered three earned runs on seven hits in four innings with two strikeouts.  Rylan Gick (3-7) earned the victory with three innings of hitless relief.  She struck out two and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Forman reached base three times on two hits and a walk, while Koopman had two hits.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Wilson went 3-for-4, while both Barkauskas and Rafferty-Flatter had two hits.
