Softball Swept At GLIAC-Leading Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (18-21 overall, 7-9 GLIAC) began the second half of the GLIAC schedule with a pair of setbacks against league-leading Saginaw Valley State University (28-8 overall, 15-1 GLIAC) on Wednesday afternoon.  After leading game one 1-0, WSU surrendered the final nine runs to fall 9-1 in six innings in the opener.  The nightcap was tied 3-3 before the host Cardinals tallied seven of the final eight runs in an 11-4 contest.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors grabbed a 1-0 lead  in the top of the second as freshman Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) was hit by a pitch.  After a fielder's choice, sophomore Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) reached on an error.  With two outs, senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) laced an RBI single through the right side.

Wayne State remained in the lead until the bottom of the fifth when a single and a walk preceded a one-out two-run double by Alana Kimble, which gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, SVSU scored once after a pair of singles, a sac bunt and a sacrifice fly.  A walk, a double steal and a hit by pitch were followed by a two-run triple from Kimble making it 7-1.    The game ended on a two-run home run by Kenzie Bromley.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks in 5.2 innings.  She struck out four.  Freshman Montgomery Pepin (Gladstone, Mich.) faced the final two batters allowing a walk and a home run.

Kimble (11-3) notched the victory after limiting WSU to one unearned run on four hits in six innings.  She struck out four and did not walk a batter while inducing 10 ground ball outs.

Four different batters had one hit apiece, with sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) recording a double.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Kimble had two hits and four RBI, while Mya Purdy had three hits, including a triple.

Saginaw Valley State scored three runs in the second snapping a scoreless draw.  Ella Schneider smacked a three-run home run after singles by Olivia Elliott and Ella Reifschneider.

Wayne State responded with a trio of runs in the top of the third to even the score at 3-3.  Ruczynski and classmate Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich. [Central Michigan]) had back-to-back doubles.  Martinez moved to third when junior Danielle Fick (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central [Notre Dame College]) reached on a dropped fly ball.  An attempted double steal resulted in Martinez scoring to make it 3-2.  Near doubled and scored when Molly Hool reached on a Cardinal miscue to tie the game.

SVSU answered with a four-run third inning.    Consecutive one-out walks preceded a fielder's choice.  With two outs, Purdy had a two-run double putting the Cardinals in front 5-3.  Lauren Evans had an RBI double and Reifschneider followed with an RBI single.

WSU pulled within 7-4 in the fifth as Near blasted her fifth home run of the campaign on a 1-2 offering.

The Cardinals tallied the final four runs in the sixth on three straight singles, a one-out two-run single by Jenna Morse and a two-out RBI single by Elliott.  The final run was scored on an attempted double steal.
