Softball Starts Second Half Of GLIAC Play At SVSU On Wednesday

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (18-19 overall, 7-7 GLIAC) begins the second half of the conference schedule with a Wednesday doubleheader at league-leading Saginaw Valley State University (26-8 overall, 13-1 GLIAC) starting at 3 p.m.  The Cardinals have played just two home games this year sweeping Davenport on March 23, which means 12 of their final 14 GLIAC games are at home.  SVSU and WSU are the top-two hitting teams in the GLIAC with batting averages of .303 (SVSU) and .290 (WSU).

SERIES HISTORY
Wayne State leads 77-58 in the all-time series, including the split at Gary L Bryce Field last month (SVSU 13-1, WSU 8-3).  The Warriors are 3-4 in the last seven match-ups.  WSU is 3-7 in its last 10 contests in University Center.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
In terms of GLIAC rankings, Wayne State is first in both hits (291) and sacrifice bunts (29).  Individually, sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) is first in appearances in the circle (21), while junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) is second with 20.  Long is also tied-for-first in saves (2), while Fisher is second in innings pitched (93.2).

Freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) leads the GLIAC in sac bunts per game (0.24), while sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) is tied-for-first in sacrifice flies (3).  Forman is second in home runs (8), while freshmen Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) is second in runs scored (27).  Defensively, freshman Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) is fourth fielding assists (58), with sophomore catcher Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) is tied-for-second in caught stealing (4).

Nicole Tines is in her fourth season guiding the Warriors and has led WSU to 18 wins this year, second-most in the last six years.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Saginaw Valley State leads the GLIAC in nearly every offensive category:  doubles per game (1.53), on-base percentage (.391), RBI (187), runs (211), runs per game (6.21), slugging percentage (.485), and stolen bases (66).

SVSU has a solid 1-2 tandem in the circle with Macy Irelan and Alana Kimble.  Irelan leads the GLIAC in complete games (12), ERA (1.41), strikeouts (136), WHIP (0.75) and fewest hits allowed per game (3.75).  Meanwhile, Kimble is tops in the league in shutouts (4).

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play its final two GLIAC home twinbills this Saturday (Roosevelt at 1 p.m.) and Sunday (Parkside at noon) with Senior Day ceremonies taking place before game one on Sunday.
