Softball Stays Alive In GLIAC Tournament With Extra Inning Triumph

After falling to Parkside, WSU defeated Roosevelt 4-3 in eight innings.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball team (24-31 overall) rebounded from an opening game loss (8-0 to Parkside), to win an elimination game, 4-3, in walk-off fashion against Roosevelt University (17-31 overall) in the bottom of the eighth inning to advance to Saturday.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rangers (26-22 overall) scored seven times in the bottom of the first in the opening contest of the 2025 GLIAC Tournament being held at The Stadium at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.  UWP was aided by six walks, a single and a double in the first eight batters to grab a 5-0 advantage.  A fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly plated the other two runs of the frame.

There was a 15-minute rain delay just as WSU was taking the field to start the bottom of the first, then another 12-minute delay when Wayne State was making a pitching change in the bottom of the first.  The final rain delay last 14 minutes in the bottom of the third.

After a leadoff single by senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central), Parkside hurler Ellie Curtis retired the next nine Warrior hitters until a leadoff single in the fourth by sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.).  Back-to-back two-out singles by senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) and freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) loaded the bases but WSU couldn't push across a run.

UWP scored its eighth run on a solo home run by Megan Medlin leading off the bottom of the fourth.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed seven earned runs, while facing eight batters.  Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) surrendered just one run in the 18 batters she faced.  She struck out three and walked one, while notching 12 outs.

Curtis recorded her third solo shutout of the campaign by limiting WSU to just four hits in five innings with two strikeouts to two walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Forman went 1-for-2 with a walk and was the only Wayne State batter to reach base twice.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Medlin had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Haley Remington had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Lakers, playing in their home ballpark, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a one-out single and an RBI double by Libby Kreykes.

Wayne State was able to knot the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third as Josephson smacked a leadoff triple to right center, her first three-bagger of the season.  On the very next pitch, Forman singled through the left side.

Roosevelt regained the lead in the top of the fifth as two walks were sandwiched around a single to load the bases with one out.  A nice stop on a ball up the middle by junior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) resulted in a fielder's choice at second base, but Ella Dvoracek was able to score the go-ahead run.  Hool then made a nice play on a ball hit to shallow right field to end the inning.

Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, the first two Warriors were retired on ground outs, but Josephson laced a 2-2 offering into left center field for her 11th double of the campaign.  On the very next pitch, Forman ripped an RBI double to left center to knot the game at 2-2.  Freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) worked a full count before singling through the right side allowing Forman to score the go-ahead run.

RU rallied to tie the game with two outs in the top of the seventh.  Kendall Pearson tripled down the left field line with two outs, then scored on a single by Athena Pomele-Pen.

WSU went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, while the Lakers had a two-out walk in the top of the eighth but were unable to snap the 3-3 deadlock.

Maddie Hool singled to left on the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth.  Senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) drilled a 2-0 pitch into center field moving the winning run into scoring position.  Sophomore Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) hit into a fielder's choice advancing her older sister to third base.  Forman walked on five pitches to load the bases.  On a 3-2 offering, Koopman flied out to shallow left field but a bluff tag from Maddie Hool forced a throw home which got away from the RU backstop allowing Hool to score the game-winning run on a nifty slide at the plate (click here to see the play on YouTube).

IN THE CIRCLE
After throwing 71 pitches against Parkside, Fisher tossed 6.1 innings against Roosevelt limiting the Lakers to two earned runs on six hits.  She struck out five and walked two, while throwing 103 pitches.  Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) notched her seventh win of the season after allowing one earned run on three hits in 1.2 innings.  She struck out one and walked one.

Kailey Hancock started for RU and allowed one earned run on three hits in two innings.  She walked one before giving way to Riley Czarnecki (11-10), who allowed three runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
