Wayne State Baseball Set to Begin Play in GLIAC Tournament

The third-seeded Warriors will first see fourth-seeded Parkside on Thursday night.

DETROIT -- The postseason is here for the 2025 Wayne State University baseball team (24-26 overall, 12-12 GLIAC) and it starts with the GLIAC Tournament to be played at Jackson Field in Lansing, home of the Lansing Lugnuts.  The third-seeded Warriors will first face fourth-seeded Parkside (30-19 overall, 12-12 GLIAC) on Thursday night with the first pitch slated for 7 p.m.

Most Recently
Wayne State and Parkside just wrapped up a four-game set last Friday through Sunday that capped off the 2025 regular season.  The Warriors won game one 10-7, the Rangers swept the Saturday doubleheader, 4-2 and 6-3, and WSU salvaged the series split thanks to a 12-2 (8 inn.) triumph in the Senior Day/Angelo Gust Alumni Day finale.

In those four games, Jacoby Dale hit .375 with the most at-bats of any Warrior at 16 (6-for-16).  Five other players in the Green and Gold that hit well against the Rangers were Aidan Arbogast (.417, 5-for-12), Caleb Sanders (.333, 4-for-12), Ty Garza (.364, 4-for-11), Bennett Hitzelberger (.400, 4-for-10), and Tony Hatzigeorgiou (.333, 3-for-9).

On the mound, neither Gabe Nazelli (0.00 ERA, 5.2 IP) nor Macio Miller (0.00 ERA, 4.0 IP) gave up an earned run in their lone appearance.  Coy Plummer was the only WSU pitcher with multiple outings against UWP and collected a 2.45 ERA in his three and two-thirds frames of work.  Miles Jamieson (1.1 IP), Ethan Getting (1.0 IP) and Phoenix Guzzi (1.0 IP) were also spotless runs wise.

If the Warriors are victorious on Thursday, they'll face the winner of two seed Grand Valley State and five seed Saginaw Valley State on Friday at 7 p.m.  If they come up short against the Rangers, they'll see the winner of top-seeded Davenport and sixth-seeded Roosevelt on Friday at 3 p.m. while trying to avoid elimination.

Scouting Parkside
Prior to this year, Parkside hadn't won 20 games in a single season since 2006 (25-30) and 30 like this year since 2005 (45-18).

Under third-year head coach Zac Charbonneau (64-85 overall, 27-57 GLIAC), the Rangers have increased their win total in each of his three campaigns.  Parkside went 5-33 the year before Charbonneau was hired to, in order, 13-36, 21-30 and now 30-19.

Coming into the postseason, UWP ranks second in the league to Grand Valley State in batting average at .313, but ranks fifth of seven in ERA at 6.18.  Starting at the plate, five everyday (2 PA/G and 75% of GP) Rangers are above the .300 mark when it comes to batting average.  Those five are Peter Fusek (.436), Owen Brock (.412), Dylan Sayles (.347), Josh Wicker (.331), and Carter Storti (.306).

Fusek is on top of OPS (1.120), runs scored (55), hits (78), doubles (17), triples (3), total bases (110), SLG% (.615), hit-by-pitches (10, tied with Max Johnson), and stolen bases (35-of-42).  Sayles is the team's ringleader in both home runs (8) and RBI (39) while Angel Rades has walked a squad-best 22 times.

Switching gears to the mound, Noah Gerritson has been Parkside's most reliable pitcher with a 3.86 ERA in 53 and two-thirds innings pitched.  Gerritson has gone 6-3 in 11 appearances (10 starts) with 54 strikeouts, 19 walks and a batting average against of .242.  He's tied with Sam Mommer (6-4) for the team lead in victories, but Mommer is first in frames of work (59.1), punchouts (59) and complete games (2, the team's only two).
