DETROIT -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) released its 2025 baseball postseason awards on Thursday evening and six members of the Wayne State University squad were featured.
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]),
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. [Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC]),
Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]), and
Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) were named Second Team All-GLIAC.
The Warriors' two Honorable Mention honorees were
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) and
Ethan Getting (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Northern [Purdue Northwest]).
Â
McGuire was voted Second Team at two positions, catcher and second base, to follow up his Honorable Mention nod in 2024. Wayne State's utility man appeared in 46 of the team's 50 games, 44 of which were as a starter, and those 44 starts came at six different positions. The 44 starting lineups included 13 at shortstop, 12 at catcher, eight at second base, six in right field, four at third base, and one in center field. McGuire juggled all of those defensive responsibilities while hitting a career-high .344 (53-for-154), which was good for second on the team (Hitzelberger) and a tie-for-12th in the league.
The third-year Warrior also notched 36 runs scored (first on the team), seven doubles, three home runs, 30 RBI (third), 25 walks (second), two hit-by-pitches, and 15 stolen bases (first, 15-of-16) while slugging .448 with a .435 on-base percentage (second). The Brighton product registered 14 multi-hit contests (third), seven multi-RBI outings, the squad's second-best hitting streak at 11, and second-longest reached-base streak at 20. Also, he started at least once in eight of the nine spots in the batting order.
In his seventh season (sixth playing) as a collegiate baseball player,
Dale was at his best. The veteran center fielder played in 46 of the team's 50 games with 42 starts, all of which were in center field, while hitting .331 (52-for-157). His .375 (33-for-88) clip in GLIAC play ranked fourth in the league. In those 46 outings, he racked up 28 runs scored, nine doubles, one triple, three home runs, 26 RBI, 72 total bases (second on the team), 16 walks, five hit-by-pitches, and 13 stolen bases (third, 13-of-16) while slugging .459 with a .408 on-base percentage.Â
Just like McGuire, Dale started at least once in eight of the nine spots in the batting order, but was a stalwart at the top of it with 12 starts at leadoff and 12 out of the two hole. Of his 46 efforts, 15 went for multiple hits (second) and six featured multiple RBI. Dale secured the longest hitting streak of any player in the Green and Gold at 16 games (March 12-April 11), also his best reached-base streak of the season.
Sanders transferred in from Dayton and only got better as the season progressed. He saw time in 45 of Wayne State's 50 games, 40 of which were as a starter, including 29 in left field, six in right and five in center. The 5-10 speedster hit .125 (2-for-16) in February and .282 (11-for-39) in March before .385 (30-for-78) in April and May combined. In just conference games, the outfielder hit .351 (27-for-77), 11th in the GLIAC. At one point, Sanders reached base in 22 straight games, the longest such streak of any Warrior on the season.Â
Overall, he racked up a .323 (43-for-133) average, 28 runs scored, 11 doubles (third on the team), three triples (tied-for-first), two home runs, 26 RBI, 21 walks, seven hit-by-pitches (first), 11 stolen bases (11-for-11), and five sacrifice hits (tied-for-first). He also accounted for 12 multi-hit contests, eight multi-RBI outings (tied-for-second) and an eight-game hitting streak.
In 2022 (redshirted), 2023 and 2024,
Nazelli made a combined nine appearances, none of which were starts. Fast forward to 2025 and the right-handed hurler pitched in 11 games with nine starts, more than any other Warrior. The redshirt junior more than took advantage of those opportunities. Nazalli totaled 53.1 innings pitched with a 3.38 ERA, 5-4 record, 34 strikeouts, 29 walks, and an opponent batting average of .262.Â
With that being said, the Farmington Hills native was even better in league play. Nazelli worked 31.2 frames in conference action with a 2.84 ERA, which ranked third in the GLIAC. Those 31 and one-third innings included six outings, all starts, a 2-3 record, and two complete games, two of WSU's three on the season. Nazelli went the distance on April 4 against Roosevelt and two weeks later at No. 9 Grand Valley State.
Â
Hitzelberger followed up his 2024 First Team All-GLIAC nod with an Honorable Mention distinction in 2025 as he played in 47 games with 45 starts (38 - 1B, 7 - DH). The first baseman/designated hitter paced the Warriors in batting average for the second consecutive campaign as he hit .349 (58-for-166) with just 11 strikeouts during the 2025 regular season. With at least two games remaining in his junior campaign, the first baseman boasts a career average of .346 (129-for-373) with 53 walks to only 37 strikeouts.Â
This spring, Hitzelberger notched 30 runs scored (third on the team), 13 doubles (second), two triples (third), two home runs, 32 RBI (first), 81 total bases (first), 22 walks (third), one hit-by-pitch, 14 stolen bases (second, 14-of-15), and four sac flies (tied-for-second). He tallied more multi-hit games than any other Warrior with 17 to go with eight multi-RBI contests, tied-for-second on the squad. His longest hitting streak was eight and best reached-base streak was eight as well.
Getting quickly became Wayne State's most reliable relief option as he pitched in a team-high 18 games, all of which were out of the bullpen. In those 18 showings, he accounted for 26 innings pitched with a 3.46 ERA, 3-2 record, three saves, 37 strikeouts, 19 walks, and a batting average against of just .141. Before the 6-2 right-hander settled into his role at the back end of the bullpen, the highlight of his season may have come on March 23 at 20th-ranked Florida Southern.Â
Getting threw the game's final five frames, his longest appearance since 2023 as a freshman at PNW, garnered his first pitching victory as a Warrior, and faced just two batters over the minimum. He gave up one hit with one free pass and three punchouts on 64 pitches. That performance lowered Getting's ERA to a season low 3.29 and earned him the first GLIAC Pitcher of the Week recognition of his career.
