GLIAC -- Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]) each received a GLIAC Commissioner's Award on Wednesday for outstanding athletic and academic performance. Drenth did so in his final season as a member of the Wayne State University men's tennis program while McGuire wrapped up his WSU baseball career.
This award honors student-athletes who demonstrate a high level of academic achievement and athletic performance. Recipients must be junior, senior, or graduate-level student-athletes. The awards are bestowed after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes. All grade-point averages are based on a 4.0 scale.
Drenth joined the impressive list of Warriors to be a two-time recipient of the GLIAC Commissioner's Award. Drenth, who just earned his second College Sports Communicators (CSC) Division II Men's Tennis Team Member of the Year honor, was voted GLIAC Player of the Year this spring for the second time in his career. He compiled a 24-10 record at No. 1 singles, along with a 25-8 mark at first doubles in 2025. Drenth finished the year ranked fourth in the region in doubles, and fifth in singles, with the squad ranked third in the Midwest Region.
He concluded his collegiate career as WSU's all-time leader in both singles victories (106) and doubles wins (122), which includes four of the top 10 all-time single season win totals for singles, and three of the top six for doubles. A three-time ITA Doubles All-American and a two-time ITA Singles All-American, Drenth helped the Warriors to three consecutive NCAA quarterfinal appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2022. Academically, Drenth earned a bachelor's degree in finance last month with a 3.966 cumulative grade-point average.
McGuire earned his first GLIAC Commissioner's Award following an outstanding season both on the diamond and in the classroom. McGuire garnered D2CCA All-Region Second Team honors as a utility player after starting games at six different positions in 2025. He was voted to the All-GLIAC Second Team at both catcher and second base and was also named to the GLIAC All-Tournament Team. McGuire led the squad in on-base percentage (.432), RBI (34), runs (40), stolen bases (18) and average with runners in scoring position (.404), while ranking second on the team in batting (.341), hits (59), total bases (77), walks (27) and fielding chances (219). He had 16 multiple-hit games and in his three seasons for the Green and Gold started at every position but pitcher and first base.
A two-time CSC Academic All-District selection, McGuire was a two-time GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team honoree after transferring from Mott C.C. Academically, the sport management major maintained a 3.78 cumulative grade-point during his six semesters at WSU. He concluded his Warrior career with a .310 average (146-for-471) with 45 extra-base hits and 85 RBI along with a .408 on-base percentage (69 walks) and 29 stolen bases. McGuire's selection is the 14th for the WSU baseball program and includes 2019 honoree Hunter Brown, who currently pitches for the Houston Astros, and three-time recipient
Karter Fitzpatrick.
