Football Upended 31-22 At Wisconsin-La Crosse

La CROSSE, Wis. -- The Wayne State University football team (0-3 overall) scored the first touchdown and the final 15 points of the game, but in between the No. 8-ranked Division 3 team the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles (2-0 overall) tallied 31 consecutive points to upend the Warriors 31-22.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The game began with both teams doing a chorus line offense (1-2-3 kick) on the first two possessions for each squad, until WSU took over at its own 45 with 8:06 remaining in the opening stanza.  A three-play, 55-yard drive resulted in the game's first score as graduate student running back D'Vaun Bentley (Detroit, Mich. / Loyola [Lawrence Tech]) plunged in from two yards out.  It was WSU's first points not in the fourth quarter this season and Wayne State's first rushing touchdown of the campaign.  Prior to Bentley's first Wayne State touchdown, starting quarterback Champion Edwards (Los Angeles, Calif. / American Fork, Utah [El Camino C.C.} had a quarterback draw for 23 yards, then found redshirt freshman wide receiver Drew Hickmott (Ortonville, Mich. / Ortonville Brandon) for 30 yards.

UWL garnered a first down but had to punt for the third time in the stanza.  Wayne State drove 40 yards but was stopped on fourth-and-two at midfield on the third play of the second period.  WSU led 97-43 in total offense during the first 15 minutes.

Second Quarter
Both teams punted on their next possession, before the host Eagles went 44 yards in five plays to knot the game at 7-7 on a 25-yard pass from Kyle Haas to Tyler Bowman on fourth-and-one.

The next five possessions all concluded with a punt.  UWL took over at its own 43 with 2:07 remaining before intermission and went 55 yards in 10 plays with Michael Stack connecting on a 19-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.

The Eagles held a 151-100 edge in total offense through 30 minutes.

Third Quarter
Wisconsin-La Crosse took the second half kickoff and drove 73 yards in 10 plays to grab a 17-7 advantage on a six-yard pass from Haas to Jack Janke.  The Eagles converted all three of their third down plays include two on third-and-10.

A WSU punt was muffed with the Warriors taking over at the Eagle 47 near the mid-point of the stanza.  A long pass on third-and-13 by Edwards was intercepted at the UWL 16-yard line.

It took the Eagles just 2:59 to cover 84 yards in seven plays with Bowman hauling in an 11-yard scoring strike from Haas with 77 seconds remaining in the third period.

Redshirt junior quarterback Braden Siri (American Fork, Utah / Lone Peak [Golden West C.C.]) took over, but WSU had to punt.

Fourth Quarter
After a missed field goal by the Eagles, and a WSU punt, Wisconsin-La Crosse extended its lead to 31-7 with a three-play, 72-yard touchdown drive culminating in a 67-yard reception by Janke on third-and-five with 7:33 left in the final period.

On the ensuring possession, three different Warriors notched their first career reception - redshirt sophomore Jordan Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich. / St. Joseph) for 47 yards on third-and-seven; redshirt freshman Raymond Payne (Pontiac, Mich. / Lake Orion) for 19 yards; and redshirt freshman Donovan Isaac (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Waterford Mott) with a 14-yard touchdown reception.

UWL went three-and-out, and the Wayne State offense responded with a 56-yard touchdown drive on seven plays.  Redshirt sophomore Trae'vion Meadows (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King [Davenport] had back-to-back receptions totaling 22 yards, before redshirt sophomore running back XaVior Tyus (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) had two catches for 12 yards.  Bell hauled in a 20-yard pass from Siri just prior to the two-minute stoppage giving WSU a first-and-goal at the Eagles five-yard line.  On the very next play, Bell caught a five-yard scoring strike for his first collegiate touchdown [putting him just 95 touchdowns behind his father WSU Hall of Fame inductee Joique Bell, who scored 96 touchdowns in 44 games between 2006 and 2009].  Bell also caught Siri's two-point conversion pass.

Following an unsuccessful onside kick attempt, UWL was able to run out the clock.

TEAM STATS
Wisconsin-La Crosse had a 398-277 advantage in total offense, as the Eagles ran 74 plays to WSU's 59.  UWL was 7-of-17 on third down, compared to the Warriors 4-of-15 (Wayne State was just 1-of-11, before going 3-of-4 late in the game).  Neither team could get a ground attack going  as WSU rushed for 76 yards in 25 attempts, while Wisconsin-La Crosse gained 55 yards on 32 carries.  The biggest difference was passing yards as the Eagles led 343 to 201.
