NMU's Hot Shooting Dooms Women's Basketball

Warriors fell 91-71 in Marquette.

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (13-5 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) concluded the first half of the GLIAC's double round-robin schedule with a 91-71 setback at No. 16-Northern Michigan University (16-3 overall, 8-2 GLIAC).  WSU is tied-for-second with NMU despite playing seven of its first 10 league games away from the WSU Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
In a slow start, each squad only scored three points in the first four minutes until junior guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) drained a triple off a feed from graduate student forward Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.), which gave the Warriors a 6-3 advantage.

The Wildcats tallied the next eight points as Wayne State went scoreless for over three minutes until a bucket by senior forward Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  Northern Michigan's Jacy Weisbrod connected from beyond the arc just 15 seconds later to extend the hosts lead to six (14-8).

Two field goals by graduate student guard Karrington Gordon (Lincoln Park, Mich. [Central Michigan]), two foul shots by Thompson and a lay-up by senior forward Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich. [Lakeland University]) kept WSU in striking distance at 19-16 after the opening stanza.

Second Quarter
The Warriors were within one a couple of instances (19-18, 21-20), but Northern Michigan went on a 17-7 run over a five-minute span to increase its lead to 38-27 on a triple by Addison Pytelski.  During the final two minutes before halftime, NMU's Sarah Newcomer drained a shot from downtown for the only points of the final 120 seconds, which gave the hosts a 14-point margin (41-27) at intermission.

Third Quarter
A Pytelski lay-up on the Wildcats first possession of the third period and a jumper by Weisbrod a minute later made it an 18-point game (45-27), prior to a lay-up by senior guard Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich. [Bowling Green], which ended nearly a five minute scoreless drought for Wayne State.

Buckets by Tubergen and junior guard Emily Homan (Haslett, Mich.) plus two free throws by Ferguson trimmed the deficit to 12 (47-35), but NMU went on a 16-2 spurt over the next three minutes to lead 63-37.  The run by the Wildcats included four made triples.

Wayne State held a 6-5 scoring advantage over the last 3:20 of the period.

Fourth Quarter
WSU out-scored the hosts 28-23 over the final 10 minutes, shooting 63 percent (10-of-16) from the floor, including 6-of-7 (86 percent) from three-point range.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 40 percent from the floor on 26-of-65, while NMU was 33-of-57 for 58 percent.  WSU connected on 7-of-22 triple tries (32 percent) with the Wildcats making 15-of-23 from beyond the arc (65 percent).  The Warriors were 12-of-15 at the charity stripe (80 percent), with Northern Michigan shooting 77 percent (10-of-13) from the foul line.  NMU held a 37-29 edge in rebounding, but Wayne State had just seven turnovers to 12 miscues for the Wildcats.
