DETROIT -- The 40th celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) is Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
Signed into recognition on February 3, 1987, National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated annually across the United States and features community-based events, notable women student-athletes, awards, and other activities.
Since its formation, NGWSD has recognized the achievements of all female student-athletes, the positive benefits of female inclusion in sports, and the progress of an ongoing journey toward equal representation in sports, including Title IX.
In 1973, Women's Athletics at Wayne State University started with six (6) teams.
This 2025-2026 competitive season there are 153 Warrior female student-athletes across 10 Wayne State women's athletic teams.
These Warrior female student-athletes carry a collective 3.67 cumulative grade-point average. In 2025, 134 Warrior female student-student-athletes earned Academic All-GLIAC awards for their work in the classroom and seven earned All-America honors in competition.
Beginning with the 2026-27 competitive season, Wayne State will be home to 11 women's athletic teams as Women's Soccer was recently announced as a Fall sport.
Since launching the annual NGWSD campaign in 2024, the initiative has raised over $22,000 in support of Women's Athletics at WSU. This year we're aiming even higher.
